The idea is to get a comprehensive list of all e-mail clients that work with System 7, noting their pro's and con's much in the style of our Browser Central. Does this client support IMAP and/or POP3? Does it support HTML or just plain text? What system requirements are there? Does it need stinky Appearance Manager? How stable is it? How exportable is the data? How good and Mac-like is the interface? .... The idea would be to find the best choices for use on System 7 Today or maybe just note the less useful ones. The question should rather be what service providers still support plain SMTP or IMAP/POP3?

That's an additional interesting question, but then you can always use a SSL tunnel like the one we're providing for free. Knezzen can virtually add next to any provider if you feed him a few info

Started adding a list of known e-mail clients to the top post. That's at least the ones I ran into over the years and that I had a test run with. Anyone been an avid user of one of them and could share some pros / cons ?

Knezzen needs to add your provider to the server if it's not Gmail, Rockethoster or VentraIP Australia. Those are the ones supported as of now.

Mulberry - linked above and on the linked page is labelled PPC... I'm happy to alert to the forum that Mulberry version 2.0.8 (the only version from the Mac Garden that runs in System 7.1 and above) is FAT encoded and runs in either a 68k or PPC platform. The info on the S7T Mulberry page should be updated to reflect this. Quote from: the Mulberry 2.x specs; Requirements:Memory requirements negate use on a Mac Plus or SE, but any 68k Mac with more than 6Mb of RAM from a Mac II onward should be fine. Mulberry is an IMAP or POP3 email client software. It supports the IMAP, POP3, IMSP, ACAP, SMTP, LDAP protocols. Full specs and operational use are given in the 'reference_guide.pdf' download from the Mac Garden page for Mulberry.

Noting the "Outlook 4.5 (PPC)" reference above. During the classic Mac OS period of System 7.1 to Mac OS 9.2.2, Microsoft's email client was called "Outlook Express". I think its original debut on the Mac was with version 4.0. It was often bundled with Microsoft Internet Explorer and the final version to run on 68k Macintosh was version 4.02 - Download #2 on the Mac Garden page is the full FAT install copy of v4.01 and DL #4 on that page is the v4.02 updater. Requirements are System 7.1+ and an '030 or higher CPU. I think the final version to run on System 7.x may have been Outlook Express v.4.5 and it only ran on a PPC Macintosh. Outlook Express v5.02 required a PPC Mac OS 8.1 or newer. I didn't use this software very much and cannot recall when or if IMAP support was built in. In my POP3 days I used mainly Claris Emailer v2.

Thanks a lot for your - as usual - excellent input, MTT!! I don' t know why Mulberry was listed as PPC-only, Knezzen brought it up (*pointing finger*) :-D I've since been able to find a few other e-mail clients and also at least find names for others. Like PowerMail. Claris Emailer v2 is actually the client I'd really like to use on my IIci. Small footprint, no support for HTML, very nice Macintosh interface. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get it to work either. It's from the days when the idea of requiring authentification via SMTP was an obscure thought ...

Gmail doesn’t work anymore. I spoke with Knezzen. It’s the one i tried. Not tried the others yet. Will try tomorrow. On the plus side it looks like he’s selling me his se/30 accelerator. Result, just waiting for payday now, oh yeah baby, bring on the power 😆 System7 forum will fly on 50mhz, bolkonskji I’ll be on par with your IICi, well nearly

Really? I need to update the page then, thanks. Gmail seems pretty bad when it comes to e-mail these days. Everything legacy and decentralized is bad, only centralized corporate is good. (if interested, here's more on the corporate takeover of e-mail (semi-modern browser needed) But yes, that accelerator will make your SE/30 probably be even faster than my IIci! We should do some benchmarking once you got it up and running - just for curiosity, 1989 machine vs. 1989 machine

I'm still kicking myself when I saw a Mac OS 9 Email client that came out in I want to say '03 and had a very simple name like 'Classic Mac Mail' or even simpler (just 'Mail' maybe) if that's possible? I somewhat remember downloading it way back then and said to myself, 'wow!  someone's still programming Classic Mac software for Classic Macs, now that's a true labor of love!'  I tried a few times to locate even a hint of its existence online and never got as much as an inkling of its whereabouts.. it's literally lost to the passage of time, except for my memory of it

I haven't tried yet as i'm been working on on getting midi working but will try this week. i could go via my g3 Imac but really I want email on my compact mac. just because, no other reason!
