Hi! my performa 6200cd has the hard disk partioned with 250mb for system 7.5.1 and about 800 for OS 8.0. I updated system 7 to 7.5.3 and it got really slow during startup and shutdown. I erased system 7 off the partion to start over but noticed that my Mac OS 8 partion is just as slow now. Is there any way to fix this? Or do I just need to completely start over? |

Recent postings in the AppleShare Client thread discuss computers operating slower than expected and possible causes. Just generally depending on how the OS was installed and configured a fresh system may be indexing drives for use on a network, it may be looking for network resources that are not present. Upgrade and fresh installs may erase tempory files or move newer files into their proper places. An older system may have damage to the hard drive and need some Disk First Aide, or a corrupted desktop database may need to be rebuilt. One can also suspect the recently installed software may doing unexpected background work that is slowing the computer down. bill

Well I didn't change the OS 8 partition at all... just updated the system 7 partition, and I haven't changed anything network wise. I erased the system 7 partition too, and the OS 8 one is still slow... not when the system is actually up and running just at startup it loads the desktop with the menu bar and the control strip, no icons and sits there for about 5 minutes until it loads the icons and lets me click on stuff. When it's shutting down it takes off the icons and sits there for over half an hour... (I just pulled the plug after that).

Try disabling TCP/IP by going to the TCP/IP control panel, going to User Mode, switching to Admin, then going to Options and setting TCP/IP to Inactive. Then restart. See if that helps. Also go to the Chooser and disable AppleTalk as well.

Well that worked! I don't know if wove said what you were saying in techier terms but thanks all the same! Now I'm just annoyed that I deleted my System 7 for no reason! :-D

The problem here is that your network is messed up somehow. The Mac is not talking to your router correctly, or you have it plugged into something it shouldn't be. Somewhere along the line there is a network problem. Even Mac OS X behaves this way if there is a serious network problem. Quote from: "helloimjoe" wove said what you were saying in techier terms Well, he was explaining why it was happening. I just told you a quick fix, which verifies that he was correct.

Well right now i'm trying to get my performa to work with the router in this post: http://forums.system7today.com/viewtopic.php?t=1036 but when I have the problem the performa is just connected right to the cable modem, not to the router.
