Emulation speed is relative to the system you are running it on. I don't know that it is worth emulating Windows on anything prior to a G4 in software. Your best bet on a PCI system would be to try to find something like an Orange Micro board and emulate it in hardware. The best version of VPC for speed is 6.1 with Windows 2000. VPC7 is bloatware and running XP with it is running bloatware under bloatware. I know 5 is slower than 6 and 4 is slower than 5 so if you are going all the way back to 3 or earlier, I don't think you'll be able to do much with it at all. You might be able to do a very slow emulation of Windows 95, but what can you really do with that?

VPC 3 is the last one that'll run in 7. The reason for considering it is for me browsers and e-mail clients. In OS 8.1 you get IE 5.1.7, which is fastish and opens most everything. Cookie Dog works with it too, and take care of cookies deleting them automatically the way one wants.

For cache I'm using RAM disk when ever possible, so cache die when turning mac off. (Icab 2.9.9a can delete cookies and cache and opens nearly everything, but I wouldn't call it quick).

From 8.6 and up Wamcom do the trick.  Sweetmail works fine, is simple and do all authentications and what not IF one uses appearance manager, which I'm not...There's no need for me to have a VPC if running something more modern than VPC 3. I'm actually waiting a delivery of a never used-shrink wrapped VPC 3 from Brooklyn, I got from Ebay. I'll let you guys know how it works in G3 366Mhz (1mb cache, 500 something ram) in 7.6.1 of course!.

I've actually found a pretty good working combo for browsing & mail. I'll post ideas of that to the software list I'm writing here elsewhere in a day or two.

RealPC derives from Insignia Solution's SoftPC and SoftWindows applications and runs on any PPC machine running 7.1.2 or better. It does Win98 emulation and does it with decent speed. It comes with DOS, but you must supply the Window's OS.

Emulators are typically either software emulators, or are hardware emulators.RealPC like SoftPC and Softwindows before it runs only MS emulation and as such is a software emulator. BlueLabel Emulator is a hardware emulator and can run any OS that can be ran on regular PC hardware. VPC falls somewhere in the middle.  VPC can run other OSes besides MS OSes, but it is clearly designed to give the best performance with MS systems.

I never paid much attention to Window's, however I was a big fan of DOS. DOS of course is older and slower and one can emulate DOS very well even with very old Mac hardware. Reply, Apple and OrangeMicro all made PC cards, both NuBus cards and PCI cards that add Intel based PC to the Mac. The last of the OrangeMicro cards can handle Pentium IIIs at 400MHz, which make them very nice for running Windows on the Mac.

Thanks, bill!

There's a lot of new info for me.
- Can any of the "modern" browsers run with DOS?
-Is it possible to run Windows/DOS at the same time with OS 7 in a mac if one uses a pci pc card?
-Realpc or VPC3 for Windows 98? Is there a speed or reliability difference that go beyond a nuance here?

I've only used Virtual PC 3 with Windows 95 under Mac OS 7.  If you have a powerful PCI Mac with a fast G3 or G4 upgrade in it, Windows 98 should be fine.
