I have 8.1 on my 7100 can I install 7.6 and not kill 8.1 on the same hd. I do not want to blow my 8.1 system away my 8.1 cd is mia for now. I got system picker installed. If I due a clean install of 7.6 will 8.1 be saved in a previous system folder that I can use system picker to switch or must I start over partition the hd and install each system into different partitions? I due have an external scsi hd could I install 7.6 into it? and switch boot disk. What key do I hold down for that? |

Clean installing 7.6.x then using System Picker will allow you to switch OSes on the same partition. You can also install 7.6.x onto an external SCSI drive and use System Picker to switch between drives.

I did install 7.5.3 last nite on the ext drive and was able to switch between them I am very happy about that. one odd thing it installed the system folder into the utilities folder I moved it out but I am not sure how I did I that. I was amazed that the mac started up with no apparent system folder I hope to have 7.6 this week. I was able to switch os with the startup disk control panel. I forgot that was in system 7. at least under system 7 Disk doubler works and so does after dark. Thanks for the help dan and bill

Is System Picker built in to the OS, or do you have to buy it seperately?

Well I got a 7.6.1 cd today from e-bay It was in a lot of old mac software for 10$. I booted up on my external drive and did a clean install of 7.6.1 on my internal hard drive. This kept 8.1 and renamed it previous system folder. Note: When installing the system software their is a button called options this will allow you to check a box to do a clean install thus saving your old system. When you do this you will need to copy your preferences extensions and control panels from the previous system folder to the new system folder preferences extensions and control panels. Remember not to mix them up. I them used system picker to select system 7.6 or 8.1. so far it works great. This set up allos me to burn cd on my B&W inder osx boot up under 8.1 on my 7100-g3 and copy the files to my hard drive with out any issues. I have speed doubler on the way and i was able to get toast 4 for 1$ on e-bay. I think my os 7.6 machine is done I only need an lcd display.
