"That word isn't necessary"...but...but...but you just used it in the description of the room!!!

Hahaha. I've been there too, @lauland! Though I have to say, while Hibernated's parser isn't exactly cutting-edge, I've also seen worse implementations than this.

I remember the author, Stefan Vogt, saying in an interview that, in hindsight, there was a lot he wished he had done differently, including the parser, but that it was his first big game and a huge learning experience. He has since published The Ghosts of Blackwood Manor, which he claims is more polished in that regard.

Anyway, back to Hibernated. I'm still stuck at the moment, with no idea what to do next, but I hope I can find another hour or two to play this evening. Are you drawing a map while playing, @lauland? If so, what are you using—pen and paper or some program?

Also, where are you in the game now? To avoid spoiling it for others, I'll use ROT13 to comment on my game: (hmm...is there a ROT13 utility for System 7 somewhere? A quick Garden search didn't bring up any results, but hard to believe given the age and popularity during the early net days)

You know, if you stare long enough at enough rot13, you will actually start to be able to read it.  At least that is how my brain works.  It seems to process it as a "very weird alphabet".

I did enough "secret code" puzzles as a kid, and then learning foreign languages (and alphabets), that I think I permanently wired my brain to start translating things without my asking it.  Every time I see an "alien language" in a tv show or movie, half the time I go, "That's f'ing English with a fancy font!  A real alien would have a different syntax and grammar blah blah blah blah".

I am avoiding staring at yours for that reason.

I am just paper mapping, but do love your idea of doing it Claris-wise.  Sadly I have not gotten far enough to need more than a map in my head, though I will push through.

Speaking of fonts, I do believe one way to decode rot13 is to just have a font with the letters rotated (...not rotated, but you know what I mean).  I'm sure one can be found like this...

(Yep, found a few good ones with a causal search...)
