UTM is a qemu wrapper for macOS, iPadOS and iPhone OS and a few days ago it was updated. One of the nice features of the update is that for emulation it now has a couple preconfigured machines for the Classic MacOS. You can pick either a Quadra 800 or a Mac99 (G4)as your base machine.

The Mac99 works well on my 2019 MBP, but is very sluggish on an. iPad. So I selected a Quadra 800 for the iPad. I tried to install System7.6 but its disk formatter would not format the qcow drive. MacOS 8.1 has the newer disk formatter and it has no problems formatting the virtual hard drive. So I installed MacOS 8.1 on my iPad.

I have a keyboard and trackpad that work on the iPad. Overall MacOS 8.1 on an emulated Quadra 800 on the iPad is very useful and speed is not an issue. Explorer 3 and Netscape 3 are both included and are both quite horrid, although I do not recall them being any better in '96/7. Cyberdog on the Garden is a zip file (really? why?). Oh then when you get it unzipped and it's a .sit file. Minor quibbles on old systems; the truth is I am pretty happy with the updated UTM setup.

It has been 30 years since I have used a 68k machine and about that long since I have used MacOS8.1.I am a total noob, starting from scratch.

Digging through the 8.1 installer CD I found there was an installer for Netscape 4. It is much better than Netscape 3, but my oh my is it ever bloated. I used Netscape 4 to do a fresh download of Cyberdog. Netscape informed me that it tried to open the file with Zipit, but it was not installed. So I downloaded Zipit. Netscape 4 also installed its own copy of StuffExpander which then took over and handled the Cyberdog.sit. The upshot is that I am not posting this from Cyberdg and I feel at home.

I thought the Control Strip is something that has been install since 7.6 anyway, but again I do not have a clue what I am talking about. 8.1 did not install the control strip and I miss it. How am I suppose to control the sound volume?

Since this is an emulated Quadra 800 it is using an emulated NuBuss video card and the max resolution is 800X600. It has also been decades since I have used that resolution. Amost makes my phone screen seem luxurious. One thing the new configuration of UTM does is allowing the pointer to move seamlessly from the emulation window, back to OS X. That is exceptionally nice. It is generally done via Spice and it might be done that way, but I did not think the classic MacOS would support spice additions.

This was a nice upgrade and I am having happy times playing around with it.

During the installation, it should give you the option to choose what you install. I've seen the control strip listed under the category of mobile, which I think is the first category, but then it's also in another category toward the bottom of the list in the menu when you pick your preferred items to install, unless I'm thinking of System 7. You can add just that one item to your system. IIRC, you need to choose the base system to install, and then on a later step, it should give you another list of items to choose from.

Otherwise without the control strip, you can click on the Apple menu, go to control panels, and then Sound or Monitors and Sound.

Edit:

Here are the exact steps for adding the control strip and other items in Mac OS 8.0. I typed this as I tried it in real life on my Power Mac 7200. I booted from a physical CD, FYI.

Go into the root directory of the Mac OS 8.0 install media. Open "Mac OS Install". The first thing shown is a window showing the installation steps with "Continue" as the only button choice ("Go Back" is grayed out). After hitting Enter or clicking Continue, it provides the option to choose the destination disk. Perform a Clean Installation is also an option. After you choose the Select button, it provides three choices: Cancel, Reinstall, and Add/Remove (the default choice).

After selecting Add/Remove, you get the same Custom Installation and Removal window you got during installation. If the window doesn't show the installers, click the "Customize" button. It shows a list of software installers. Mac OS 8 at the top must be checked in order to add/remove components. When you click start, you get a welcome screen. Hit Continue. The next window should be titled "Install System Software". Click the top left option in the window, and choose "Custom Install".

The control strip is located in Mobility and again in Utility. It also has a control panel, so you might want that. Then hit Enter or click Install.

Thanks for the detail guidance. I was able to find and install the control panel. I spent yesterday evening playing with 8.1. UTM actually works better on the iPad than it does on a Tahoe MBP. Using features of the Apple ecosystem, I mirrored the iPad screen to the Apple TV. I can sit in my cushy comfortable chair using a bluetooth keyboard and trackpad and mess around with OS 8.1. Just try doing that with a Quadra 800 :) Now if Siri could just grab me a beer, I could say that tech has advanced as far as it needs to go.

Awesome, glad to hear that. It must look pretty good on a modern tv with big screens.

Good news for emulation on iPad and older intel Mac hardware, UTM was updated about a week ago. This update includes the latest QEMU backend as well as updated machine configurations. Included in the update machine configuration is updates for both Quadra 800 and the G3 machines. This results in big increases in speed for emulating classic MacOSes.

My 2019 iPad as well as my 2015 MBP are both very usable as OS 9 as well as OS 8 machines. I have not tried System 7 yet, but I imagine it will also be quite useable. The 2015 MBP emulates the classic Mac OS very well. The trackpad and keyboard make it like using an old Powerbook. The iPad alone with its touch interface remains a bit odd to use, but with an external keyboard and mouse, it too behaves nicely and is easy to use.

Getting UTM for the iPad does involve going through the store and it has a nominal cost. The Mac version is also available via the App Store, but can be downloaded and installed bypassing the store and cost. The iPad version cannot use jit because of iPad OS restrictions, but it still preforms very well.
