This post: here is a link Seems to break the formatting of the site. Everything on a page typically falls into one very clear column the same width as the back header bar with "Forums logo Sytem7Today" at the top. For some reason today using a newer (Catalina) version of Safari this post spreads out much much wider than than that bar at the top. It is not a problem, but I was curious as to why that post in particular triggered that layout. Upon further looking. The post formats correctly in Cyberdog on OS 9, so I gather the oddity must be in Safari and probably of no bother to to System7 users. |

I tried the post on a modern machine running Chrome, and it does the same thing, so maybe that post's long website URL only affects modern browsers?

The problem arises if somebody posts a very long URL that is interpreted as a "block". For the sake of old browsers (read: no use of CSS) no line break is automatically made. Look, I've edited your link and see what happened to the width of the text column. It shrinks back to normal. We'll think about a way to solve this via a rewrite function maybe. Gotta talk to Knezzen

The issue is somewhat trivial and my mention of it is just something of a knee jerk reaction. My noticing it is also probably related to my personal browsing habits. I have never liked "tabs" so I have my browsers always open links in a new window. And when a new window opens with different formatting it jumps out at you. Anomalies happen so seldom now. Way back when, they were more prevalent and at that point Dan and I communicated via email rather than the forum or private messages. By the way emails to let you know about private messages still arrive as being from "Dan", but the email address they come from is from the forum's domain. Also the change made in the url in my post, results in an error of the link being invalid. Overall it is really amazing to me how well the site has held up over time. Anomalies are very rare, and the site has just continued to deliver solid reliable, error free content for what a couple decades now?

Do you possibly have Dan in your address book? I get them from "System 7 Today - Forum" as a sender. Either way, it's nice having Dan sending PNs out to the old gang as a way to stick around here. Wish he'd drop by at times and say "hi" :-) Quote from: wove Also the change made in the url in my post, results in an error of the link being invalid. I'm sorry. Entirely my mistake. I edited it in a rush and a few characters entered the URL that shouldn't have been there. Edited again and works as suggested. Who would have thought that back in fall 2005 when a young student coded up a webpage? Many projects don't even live to see a tenth of that. We need to have a celebration somehow. Any ideas? :-)

Quote from: “Bolkonskij” Do you possibly have Dan in your address book? I have not opened my Address book in a long time, but yes, Dan is still in my address book. One of the email addresses I have is "staff@sys. . . ". I guess that answers that question. I noticed logging in today that I was offered to use my finger print to log in. I had been wondering why it did not autofill. There was a system update from Apple a couple days ago. Maybe that made the change. Of course perhaps you made some change to make the site's log in more compatible with Apple's rather new "Passwords" app.

I usually use iCab 2.9.9 on System 7 (7.6.1) and it appears wider than my browser window also. I have noticed this in the past with other posts. I agree that it is not convenient. I never really thought much about it, though. I just edited it and turned it into a fancy link so that it looks better. Sorry about that. It was lazy of me not to make it a fancy link to start with.

We didn't and we won't change anything about the login unless we're forced to. (and in that case, we'd communicate it here!) Well, it is what it is. I appreciate everybody taking the time and putting URLs in Fancy Links (you find the code for it below every "Post" button!). We'll nonetheless look for a way to solve this via the backend so you guys won't have to worry.
