the DS just turned 20 and so did i (on the 10th) so in a way it can be considered retro i look at the original wii as retro myself as it was the last 480p console built for CRT TV's and is not much more powerful than the OG XBOX plus it easy to softmod and if you do that you open the door to great backwards compatibility going back to the NES all the way to the gamecube! |

That's awesome to hear! Happy birthday! I love how into games you are. I never modded my Wii. I never had a DS, but I'd like to get a big 3DS. Speaking of games, I was looking through some old 5.25" floppy disks tonight, and discovered that whoever owned them before me had some games I hadn't found yet: Mario Bros, Ms. Pac-Man, Spy Hunter, and something else. Another one had Mecca games written on it, but it wouldn't come up.

Happy Birthday from me as well! My, has it already been 20 years since the Nintendo DS came out? I remember it, at the time being a student and earning some cash for writing video game reviews. I still love both Hotel Dusk adventure games on the Nintendo DS. Well, enjoy your retro gear. There's so much creativity and great games for the old machines out there ...

Yeah, it's a bit mind blowing having to re-calibrate my brain as to what is "retro" now. I just got the latest issue of "Retro Gamer" and half the stuff in it is 3d and ran on risc chips...which back in the day was "mind blowing"...and not the usual 2d, 8 and 16 bit running on 6502's, z80's, and (heaven forbid) 68000's they've typically covered! So, what exactly IS retro? The technology has been a little stagnant...like, ok, the original xbox and playstation, definitely retro...the generation after that? Ok, also retro. Is a PS3 retro? But the jump in new ideas, as far as the tech hasn't been all that great after that. Like, is "Half Life 2" considered retro? Once we got 3d acceleration, it's just been refined and refined, with intelligent shaders, higher resolution, etc etc...but nothing REALLY new. You could argue we're actually at the cusp of one right now with AI...but, at least in games, we've yet to see any real fruit from that particular tree... I guess, you get what I'm saying...the original XBox had decent 32 bit cpu, hard drive, 3d accelerated video and the latest xbox and playstation...same thing, just bigger and faster. So, in my book, retro was always "before 3d" and "before 32 bit". But that doesn't seem to work anymore...so the line is really hard to draw! My b-day is tomorrow, and I'm way more than twice the age of the DS!

Its a joy & pleasure to see, that the love for the vintage ways has caught on with the younger generation, too. So much love, dedication and yes, also years of precious life went into developing both software and hardware of systems that now only live on because we - the committed few - have decided to keep them going. Happy birthday to you, dear friend!

Happy Birthday snes1423 & lauland! So good to see the youngsters take to vintage gaming! The only consoles I ever had were an Atari 2600 (long gone) and a 1st gen Sega Genesis and a Sega Genesis Nomad (both of which I still have). I don't think either of them has even 20 hours on them. Now, I'm not 20,30,40,50 or even 60... just had a birthday myself last week... I turned 68! Still love all my vintage computer gear! A big thank you to all who keep vintage alive! 😎

and the quality of games has fallen apart it used to be the whole game was on disc and you didn't have to worry about 300gb of updates or patches like COD MW3's remake has or how about all the day 1 bugs like in the new Microsoft flight simulator dont get me wrong i do love stuff like Final Fantasy XII the Zodiac Age and Sonic Mania Plus on my XBOX One but i only ever install whats on disc and i always keep my XBOX One completely offline by changing the dns to a random number and entering offline mode

Happy birthday (belated) to lauland & Johnny7 too. Wait, wait... we're all November kids? I see a pattern here! :-) I think the stagnation in tech has a lot to do with the "corporatization" of it. Huge corps effectively control significant market share and are under no direct pressure to come up with new ideas while squeezing or buying out any newcomer. Things were different during the 80's and 90's with small little teams or companies trying out new stuff or pioneering new ideas.

I happen to digress. I think the primary source of our misery is the very Internet our generation helped to create. It has turned what used to be - and was meant to be - a "thinking aid" of the nerdy few (at least outside the office world) into just another end consumer device. Oh yeah, kids nowadays know how to use their tablet - like they do the TV remote. But the technology behind it all, is a greater mystery to GenZ than our home computers used to be to our parents. I had myself some interesting chit chats with ardent AI followers. They are all fascinated by the prospect of becoming rich and famous, by being able to regurgitate the latest buzz word salad. But the statements they concoct out of that "dish" are so technologically hair brained, that I decided to simply keep my mouth shut and nod in agreement. No use to argue with a delusional n00b about his delusions. We were the pioneers. After us came the business people and now our heritage is in the hands of trust fund babies, who barely know the technology behind a light switch. What else are companies supposed to do, but put animal feed on the shelves, if their customers turn out to be cattle and sheep?

Well, I'm all for recapturing the innocence of computing for "the rest of us". I loved that philosophy back then when it was much newer and less tainted, and still do now ![]() Even though corporations quickly started to compromise it to their own will even back then, creating the entire Windows vs. Mac tug-of-war and its endless discussion about which platform was better. And the Internet indeed came with promise, but as we have witnessed, it has done more than what it was cracked up to be, just not all for our benefit as much as the benefit of those who profit from its use most. I wish I could say that it's mainly for our benefit, but in today's world, the personal computing landscape has become a dog-eat-dog soup, to a world seemingly content to serve those who give us free things, yet all at a price that not all of us are willing to pay.
