I'm not familiar with the various models, but the older ones have an "expansion port" (it looks like it was known also as a "parallel port"), which brings out most of the important CPU and control lines.

I've got a couple little doohickies that plugin into that, like cartridges, that let you...cough...make backups, and do cheatcodes.  If yours has that port, you should see if you can pick up one.

----

I've got two PS1's, one I actually bought when it was new (yes, that long ago), and the 2nd from Goodwill because it "looked weird".  I lucked out and the "weird" one had a modchip installed!

It's actually pretty funny the way the modchip works...official game disks have an ascii string, something like "SONY USA" or "SONY JPN" written to an inner track that standard cdrom readers (and more importantly writers) can't get to...so the modchip is actually a teeny-tiny microcontroller, hooked into the cdrom that senses when it goes to that track and all it does is output "SONY USA SONY USA" etc.  The bios just checks that it can read a region code that matches...so whatever disk I put it looks like a USA disk.

Not only does it let me play foreign disks, but burnt ones too!

I had TONS of fun downloading Japanese games that had never made it to the west.  Especially the Super Robot Wars series (I'm a sucker for mechs).  I can read a very small amount of the language (the phonetic part and some kana), but the fonts are horrible at tv resolution, but it's still fun!

----

I've always wanted to write some code for it, but have never gotten around to it...even just "Hello World" to say I did it.  You can find the official devkits and the "net yaroze" ones on archive.org, but there are a lot of third party ones too.  I just thought it'd be pretty miserable and I'd waste a LOT of cdroms just figuring it out.  I never really looked into using the "cartridges" on the expansion port, but could probably use them to download code.  (They have rs232 serial ports).

----

My brother gave me one of those modern PS1 remakes that come with tons of games...turns out they are actually just ARM based (like Apple Silicon and iphones) computers and you can flash mod them to put pretty much anything else you like, including emulators for other machines.  I've got so much to play with already I've never gotten around to doing that.

That's so awesome. I bought a PS2 brand new, paying $300 US if I remember correct. I had that before the PS1. I bought a PS1 years later. I would have loved a PlayStation back in the '90s. I had a Nintendo 64 back then that I got in 1997. That is my favorite game console of all time.

My favorite game on the PS1 was Metal Gear Solid, and still is. I even have it hooked up to an old Sanyo CRT TV, along with a common tv stand from back then, for maximum nostalgia. I have a composite switchbox connected to the TV (the yellow, white, and red jacks) so that I can switch easily between my Nintendo 64, Sony PlayStation, Nintendo NES, Sega Genesis, and my VCR.

I totally forgot all about the serial and parallel expansion ports. Now I really want to play with them. I love expansion ports. I don't know why, but it's so satisfying to use hardware features that aren't normally used.

A couple months ago I bought Xenogears on the PS3 store, but I haven't played it much. I have the sequel Xenosaga for PS2 that is really good.

Made me dig up my old disks...Looks like I gave away most of my physical media to cousins and whatnot...but here are the few that I kept, and last was playing a decade (or more?!?) ago:

Final Fantasy 7 and 8 (of course)
Star Wars Phantom Menace (More adventure game like than you'd expect)
Dino Crisis 1 and 2 (Basically Resident Evil, but with Dinosaurs)

I also have Atari, Activision, and Intellivision's greatest hits because emulators back then weren't as friendly as now, and I wanted a "put the disk in and it just works" experience, with decent joysticks.

I have a LOT more PS2 and Dreamcast (and even Saturn, very cheap when it was disappearing).  When something came out for multiple platforms, I avoided the PS1 version for the lower rez graphics.  (I've got Dino Crisis for Dreamcast also and it blows the PS1 version away).

This guy does very nice capsule articles about different consoles architectures and here's his about the PS1, if you were ever curious about tech details:

Awesome, thanks lauland! I love stuff like that. I also have a Dreamcast (Japanese version), and a Sega Saturn. I also have an Atari 2600. That was my first console ever.

I also have a Jaguar and Lynx (version 2), but the Lynx has a very bad screen, and certain areas on it are ruined.
