Possible yes. Likely? No.

Why a handheld? What would I do with a handheld ? (except maybe playing games?)

I do envision somebody to come around and creating a FPGA-based laptop with the existing Mac Plus core though. Probably the closest thing to it :-)

That's pretty cool. I've wanted something like that for a long time.

Actually we sort of already have SOMETHING like that...or at least 68000 based handhelds: The earlier Palm Pilots, the TI-89 calculator (and sisters), and handheld Sega Genesis compatibles.

None of them run System 7, of course, but the PalmOS is VERY similar to it, at least from a programming point of view.  In theory some sort of emulator could be written for them except...

The genesis doesn't have a true bitmap screen, and even if it did, the resolution is far too low...only 64k of ram, and the cpu is ~8mhz...you could store the filesystem on a cart though...

The TI-89's screen is too small, and the cpu is quite slow at 10-16mhz.  256k ram and the filesystem could be on flash...

The stock Palm screen is only 160x160 pixels (yep!), but there were a few M68k models that had 320x320 pixel screens...still too small sadly...but they had at least 1m of ram, and some had cpu's that went up to 33mhz.

----

So, even though the screens are tiny, you could, of course, run a port of MvM on them (if those existed)...but then you'd be emulating an M68k on an M68k and it'd be pretty miserable...

But, what if you did something like AMAX for the Amiga?  Technically it is less an emulator, and more a hack to get it to run the Mac Plus roms, along with drivers to make the Amiga hardware look like a Mac.  It runs on a stock Amiga quite well, even at ~8mhz with no MMU.  You lose 128k of your ram (plus overhead for the hacks) to store the roms.

Such a beast COULD, in theory be done on any of the handhelds I mentioned above.  The Palm would obviously be the most promising.  I think AMAX probably works by hooking an IRQ and updating low memory globals, in addition to heavily hacking the rom and drivers...so if you could get a timer generated interrupt...hmm...
