No need for the "if" in that. This is wholly unacceptable, period. All of Windows is backdoored since minimally as far back as Windows 95 OSR (with the "NSA key"), but especially since Windows 8, 8.1 and 10. Also Windows 7 SP1 if you update it all the way. The moral of the story is that it is important to: 1) Understand some people are dishonest and genuinely bad; 2) Avoid taking people's words, such as announcements, at face value all the time. Older tech, and also many older OSes, have incredible value in that we have access to computing while retaining inherent human rights. For some it's a hobby thing, for others it's even a "let's not waste" thing, and for many others it's also a matter of being productive, but it is also excellent for much related to security (although nothing beats airgapping in the end of the day).

True words. Yet another reason for not upgrading and staying on "outdated" OSes that might not be as pretty, but are YOURS. @snes - fixed that extremely long URL

@Bolkonskij But the older OS in our case is also prettier. As a bonus.

"Good point, Jatoba", he said. Then he hit the "Post" button within iCab 2.9.9 running on 7.1 on his 1989 Mac IIci.

So, as an example of getting away from Microsoft altogether, I've been helping out with a small homeschooling computer lab that happened to have an older Mac they wanted to implement in some way, once I offered to help with that, that is she only uses Chrome due to past, nasty virus bouts, so I added FileMaker to her Mac and shared a couple of databases to try out, then I added a couple of FM clients running on SheepShaver under Wine and viola! They now have a simple database to keep their lab a bit more organized! I know they have one student who joins remotely once a week, so I suggested adding another Chromebook she can remote into since I still haven't figured out an easy way to setup a remote LAN quite yet ![]() And while they technically are in a "Google-ly" mess (they use a legacy service and the extra paid space just got refunded) the Linux option helps to loop them out of the Google environment completely and use a networked Mac OS solution and I'm happy with the way it's turned out so far! And I'm almost there as far as the remote portion I think? I want something super-duper easy, so I've been researching Glinet routers as a hw solution

dont get me wrong i have a 1400cs/117 and a 166 and a headless 520c but i love 16-bit emulation with the SNES and Genesis/GBA but a 3400 is too far out of my league money-wise and shipping's a nightmare when it comes to huge brittle boxes

Personally I am not a fan of Microsoft's current state of Windows, I particularly dislike the fact that Windows is now a rolling-release system, and certain versions don't get support after a while unless you update to the latest feature update. Thankfully this isn't an issue with LTSC releases, but I am disappointed to see Windows 11 LTSC 24H2 seems to be more reliant on the AI stuff now. Honestly if Microsoft keeps this up even on x86 computers I'll be switching over to any distro of GNU+Linux as my main OS and I'll have to suck it up when something doesn't work (: You really can't trust new technology these days, it's sad. Apple had a really scary bug with iOS 17.5 where even the permanently deleted photos start popping back up, and if this is actually true and backed up by many users... Apple could get sued big time. Unfortunately with all the open-source alternative software and operating systems out there, it'll be a while before they're truly going to replace Windows and modern macOS. Granted, Windows 11's particular case with Copilot and the AI back-tracking feature only really works on the newest ARM-based processors... but I could see a lot of this type of stuff coming to other computers as well. What a sad world we live in... Sent from my Power Macintosh 6400/G3 on Mac OS 7.6.1 thru iCab 2.9.9 ![]() (speaking of which, this NEEDS a fan for the G3 L2 upgrade card!!)

Well spoken, alectrona. Luckily, there are alternatives when it comes to computers, depending on your needs. There seem much less such choices with smartphones though, which is something that really bothers me.

@Bolkonskij I researched this so much over the years... My conclusion, after looking into all kinds of "alternatives": The only replacement is no phone at all. Or rather, a fully-wired landline phone. Banking etc. is IMO best done always in person. Easier said than done, even for me. But it is doable-- when you draw the line for yourself, others around you will (slowly) follow/adapt.
