How can I broadcast my System 7 machine's name on my LAN? I use Angry IP Scanner on my Mojave machine and nothing shows up from my Q605. I tried turning on file sharing but no go. Thanks for any info. 😎

Have you turned Appletalk on in the CP, and selected the appropriate network?

Thanks for the reply ovalking... I'm running Open Transport V1.1.2

The AppleTalk dialog box simply says "Connect via: Ethernet" / Current Zone: <no zones available>

This whole AppleTalk thing confuses the heck outta me. I don't have an AppleTalk Network. Am I even able to use AppleTalk with Open Transport?

Is this something that could be done with a local host file or something like that? Assign my Mac machine name to my static IP? I don't know, just grasping at straws here. 🤔

Let me ask first, what it is, that you'd like to do? Sharing files between the two machines? Or something else?

Any particular reason you've chosen Open Transport 1.1.2 over 1.3 ?

The Garden has links to the latest OT, version 1.3.1, that has been adjusted to work on Macs from System 7.1 up to Mac OS 9.2.x, which should include your Quadra ;) just remember to install it with extensions off (else you could also remove the existing OT extensions in your System Folder; I go ahead and remove the prefs file of things I update or reinstall for good measure, although you might need to reconfigure your TCP/IP settings afterwards, not completely sure on that though; well, I've also moved my preferences folder out completely when the issue seems unsolvable to rule out system preference issues, then move stuff back but that tip's better on test or more vanilla installs since some apps create invisible preference files) here's the link to it:

AppleTalk is part of Open Transport. It's just another network protocol like TCP/IP.
e.g. Click the Info button in the AppleTalk CP, and it will mention the OT version.
Whilst you can update OT, version 1.1.2 does work just fine with sys 7.5.5 on my P475.

Not really sure what your aim is, but with AppleTalk & file sharing on, the host machine name should appear in the Chooser of other Macs when you click AppleShare.o

First, to the point. Yes, view the Quadra,s host name on my Mojave machine running Angry IP Scanner (excellent app BTW). The only reason I even brought this up was I had an IP conflict between the Quadra in my office and the Catalina machine in my garage. Angry IP Scanner made for quick conflict ID'ing and there was no host name next to the Quadra's static IP using the IP Scanner.

Thanks for the help guys! @ovalking, well the only other Macs that I have running are PPC and Intel (Leopard 10.5.8, Mojave and Catalina). I know that I'm going to be dealing with limitations with the Mojave and Catalina machines. Even reading extensively about Mojave, the OS has some serious flaws. Even NFS Manager on Mojave is a real pain and I still haven't got that to start up correctly.

So, just quickly as to not make this a real concern, because this newer single level house (no basement) we bought a few years ago has no ethernet cabling anywhere, I'm using a few Netgear range extenders (with ethernet connection - connected to a few switches in the house). The Mojave machine sits near the Quadra in an office. The Catalina and Leopard machines are on another Netgear extender at the opposite end of the house in the attached garage. The Leopard machine is in the garage too (along with a Win 7, Amiga 2000 & A1200, DOS/Win3.1, Mac Catalina & others - all networked. Can you say disparity and a lot of running back and forth!

So, in conclusion, yea, I gotta get off my butt and get OS 9.2.2 installed on another Mini that I have. I'm sure I would learn a lot more of how multiple, pre-OSX, machines interact on a network. Not to mention, get my HP Laserjet printing on the old Macs (which I have an OS 9 driver)!

I'll come back when I have more ducks in a row! 😊
