After extensive testing and fixing, I'm pleased to announce that we (The Macintosh Garden / System 7 Today Crew) is bringing back Sherlock 2 as well as creating some new plugins for it. Now you can happily search your favorite retro Mac sites right from System 7 - OSX 10.5.x.

Check it out here:

And of course we support System 7 as well (through WannaBe).

Happy searching! :)

That is very nice. The two features of the Classic Mac I particularly enjoyed are Sherlock and Data Detectors. Data Detectors could always be installed in System 7, but Sherlock used to require a newer OS. Great work, thanks.

Had an unexpected twist in my life and had to move. Now I'm gearing up to move again in the next few months. Been thinking about this forum over the past while, just so busy that I haven't had time to visit. Awesome to visit and learn about this new feature. Will be back in due time once I have my 9600 set up in this new house :)

It's awesome and is fun even though I've never been a big Sherlock fan. But I gotta say, the best feature is easily the System 7 Today banner. ... ;-)

I admit that I haven't used Sherlock much either. Always been more inclined to use Find Stuff, as its interface works better for me (and is nearly identical to Find Any File on the OS X side of things, so there is minimal re-learning that I need to do).

These new channels are an amazing addition and gives back Sherlock's main advantage over Find Stuff, which is the ability to search the web.

I grabbed the Sherlock Mega Pack and installed in on 8.6.  A real blast from the past to use ol' Sherlock once again.

Tip of the cap to those who created this!

I installed the Sherlock plugins in Wannabee, but how do I run them?

This is mentioned in the readme and on the garden page with the downloads, but I'll add it to here as well:

For WannaBe users (68k and PowerPC, System 7.1 and up):

1. If you don't have WannaBe on your system, install it using the included packages in the WannaBe for System 7.1 folder. Internet Config 2.0.2 is needed in order for WannaBe to function and is also to be found in the same folder.

2. Drag and drop the Sherlock Plugins you want to use with WannaBe to the Change Creator To WannaBe AppleScript, also included in this package. Your plugins are now of WannaBe document type.

3. Put your Sherlock (now WannaBe) plugins somewhere handy, like in the Apple Menu for easy access.

4. Open the plugin file you want to use, WannaBe will be started and a search query window will be presented to you.

5. Search away!

Well, as long as you have System 7.1 or up on your Classic Mac, I think so :)

And it's the bees-knees for searching the web with the revived Sherlock plug-in from Knezzen's description of it!! :D
