So a really super cool web reader was uploaded to the Garden yesterday called, well, Offline Reader! ![]() This amazing thing is like a can opener and I've been playing with some epubs and browsing their zipped content and I'm finding it so cool to merge old programs with the latest publications.. wow! who knew?? ![]() Here's the link! Enjoy http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/offline-readerNow it makes me wonder if other web and web-ready programs can do similar tricks? I was thinking of the likes of CyberDog and even AppleWorks 5!

So I found out that this program only reads text, so my search continues for a good HTML reader, so testing CyberDog and ClarisWorks is next once I get a little extra time to try those out

I've seen the thread over at the Mac Garden and read the excitement over it. I feel like I'm missing out on some info as why this is so great? :-) What I got is that it provides you with a distraction free environment to read text files. Does this support eBook formats? Been using BBedit as my "offline reader" for years (reading all sorts of text files). Has some cool features like soft wrap, formatting and such too. Any reason to switch?

Hey guys! ![]() Thread: looking for a 68k ebook program Offline Reader reads; "Usenet news or email, Offline will read through the file and construct an index of articles, authors, subjects, dates, etc., through which you can page to find the information you want. If the file is just plain text, Offline formats it for display as plain text." And HTML http://revontulet.org/2022/08/28/Offline-Reader-1.jpg http://revontulet.org/2022/08/28/Offline-Reader-2.jpg http://revontulet.org/2022/08/28/Offline-Reader-3.jpg And eBooks -when converted Garden page updated: Pic# 5 - 6 shows example of an eBook.PDF converted. But its biggest strength is when you quit your document. When you open your 'converted eBook' e.g. 'Tricks of the Mac Game Programming Gurus' at over 900 pages -Offline Reader remembers what page you last left. I don't know what the Usenet news and email extensions was back then, but I assume saving in that format brings up the interface shown on the first screenshot on the Garden page. Thought that one shows its a Text document. Simpletext were used in the above linked screenshot.

I see now! ![]() Okay, so it has all the potential, you just need to convert your ebooks from HTML to text then, got it!

It really does ![]() To meet everyone's high hopes and expectations -I tinkered a little bit more. What you are looking for @cballero you'll find New Trick v1.1.5 can do. ![]() http://revontulet.org/2022/08/28/BBEdit-HTML.jpg http://revontulet.org/2022/08/28/NewTrick-HTML.jpg @Bolkonskij Initially, before moving over to OS9, I saved the System7Today page as Webpage, HTML Only =(title.htm) Then opened it up in TextEdit http://revontulet.org/2022/08/28/name-htm.jpg Then chose Format > Make Plain Text =(name.txt) I downloaded this eBook.PDF http://ia804606.us.archive.org/19/items/murder-mercy-ebook/Murder%20Mercy%20EBook.pdf Then I used PDF Editor Pro to convert the PDF to a Text Document: http://revontulet.org/2022/08/28/Murder_Mercy_eBook_v1.jpg But also converted it to MS Office Word (.doc) -which looked better. Then I open that one up in TextEdit and chose Format > Make Plain Text =(name.txt) http://revontulet.org/2022/08/28/Murder_Mercy_eBook_v2.jpg Before moving all the files over to OS9. I opened the name.htm file in Internet Explorer 5 http://revontulet.org/2022/08/28/IE5-HTML.jpg Then saved it as Plain Text http://revontulet.org/2022/08/28/IE5-Plain-Text.jpg Which displays like this when opened up in Offline Reader http://revontulet.org/2022/08/28/Offline-Reader.jpg There's a lot more possibilities to explore like; http://web.archive.org/web/20010421185727/http://www.thothsw.com/yanw/ http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/decoder-31-etresoft http://www.turbozen.com/mac/yenc/

I love it!! So much more Mac-playing to do, yet so little time!! ![]() And saving html files as text was exactly what I envisioned for easier reading, except because ebooks can be littered with a zillion html files, I totally respect the coolness of offline reader for its ability to recall the exact places you stopped reading at!! ![]() Gosh, now you got me thinking some more.. I'm sure there must be cool ways to automate these multi-page html to text conversions (not limited to Classic Mac OS of course)

Very cool, thanks for sharing this detailed process! I can see that PDF Editor Pro runs on modern OSX, so that's where the "Mac OS line" breaks. I wonder if there's any online converters available that turn (modern) PDFs to a text document. If not, it shouldn't be too hard to write one. Same goes for the HTML to text conversion. After all you're just stripping the strings "clean"? That would give us the possibility to instantly go through the process without needing modern hardware. I also wonder if we should keep an archive of such converted files here. At least a handful of classics from the likes of Shakespeare, Goethe, Hugo, etc.

Or maybe just use Can Opener? ![]() http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/canopener-40 That thing simply pries text (or anything else for that matter) from any source, including system files (think of it as a resource exporter, so in a way, it has a few of the powers of resedit, but unlike it, it doesn't need to add any resource forks to documents to open them like resedit does) and it was a lifesaver when documents went corrupt. I suppose it could do similar things for normal PDFs (although Adobe could have just had an export or save as text menu item to make that a simpler process, even if it was only for the paid product (then again, it might? I haven't used Acrobat in a while, again because it's cumbersome to use in Classic, at least in emulators since I can just view PDFs in the emulator's host OS)

Wow, I wasn't aware of Can Opener. Nice suggestion, cballero! If it works, that should basically be the missing tool. I just wonder how it deals with format and such. Need give that one a try later.

Haha, you're opening a can of worms!! ![]() Yes, the maker must have thought that people (like me!) would have wanted to copy and save media and text data from any type of file, but it was when those infamous "can't open file" or "your file is corrupt" file error messages would strike on an important file or you simply received or downloaded a file that you didn't have the app for and you just wanted to access the data inside.. this tool quickly became a staple and part of my personal toolbox for sure! ![]() So don't leave your Mac, aka 'home', without it!
