I know that this is a Mac-centric website but I think it's also a good place to post this since chances are some of you like and have Atari machines (I'm looking at you Knezzen ).I've done a little bit of reading on Atari machines. Some of the midi s tuff I saw done with Creator/Notator is absolutely WICKED. I'd love to have an Atari with the dongle and SMPTE/Midi interface. I'm located in the USA at the moment and Ataris are harder to come by. Do you guys have any recommendations for rigs, and any o ther advice? One thing I really want to try with an Atari rig is oldschool drum sample replacement. I've never had success with MTC sync, and SMPTE itself might not be that much better either, but I hear that for some reason the Atari rigs with the aforementioned SMPTE/Midi interface work like absolute magic for syncing to tape machines. There's something about it that just keeps everything perfectly in sync that other midi/SMPTE setups, not even our good old Macs, could do. Why do you think that is? |

I would look for a STE machine (520STe or 1040STe or even Mega STe doesn't matter) and a Emagic LOG3 "dongle". The LOG3 has the dongle for Creator, Notator and Logic built into it as well as 4 extra MIDI OUT ports. It's what I have and use with my studio Atari .If you do want to just runt Notator though and don't mind just one MIDI IN and one MIDI OUT you can grab just about any of the ST or STe's and use the cracked version of Notator circling around the web. The Atari's MIDI interface is directly connected on the main bus in the machine, that's why it's so kick ass . Adding MIDI compatibility to a Mac or PC always means adding stuff on a serial port or USB port. Stuff that needs drivers and adds latency in itself.I might have some old ST's laying around. I can have a look. I only have one LOG3 though and I intend to keep that one around

I believe I read something about the additional midi ports Vs. the onboard midi ports with Ataris. Would it be that the internal ports on the Atari are much better and faster than the ones you get with the interface? I'll have to do more reading because there were multiple dongles and interfaces and I don't know which one will suit me best.

As a rule of thumb, anything that connects to the ROM port/cartridge port is GOOD. The ROM port is also directly connected to the main bus, so you'll get the same wonderful MIDI timing as you would with the built in ports. Anything that connects on the se rial port or modem port is not as good as the built in stuff, but not worse than anything you plug into the serial port on a Mac. Emagic Export gives you three additional MIDI OUT over RS-232 for instance. Not at all the same thing as the ROM port expans ions in terms of MIDI timing. The "best in class" is for sure an Emagic LOG3 daisy chained on the ROM port with a C-Lab or Emagic UNITOR2. Giving you a total of 6 MIDI OUT and 4 MIDI IN on the system. You can of course use a Emagic Export as well for a t otal of 9 MIDI OUT. Notator and Logic supports this combination (and is what I have and use). EDIT: Found an old picture of said setup. Nowadays with a modern flatscreen monitor and not the old SM124 though . Still have this machine in the studio thoug h with the same setup.http://images.macintosh.garden/2021/02/14/studiotari_2.jpg EDIT 2: Found more pictures of stuff ![]() http://images.macintosh.garden/2021/02/14/logtari.jpg http://images.macintosh.garden/2021/02/14/logtari2.jpgg

Awesome pics ![]() I'm in the middle of arranging a new setup for my studio so soon I'm going to look into having an Atari section. I don't think it'll replace SVP, but for some things I can see myself using the Atari for. I'll let you know what I decide on.

There's only one 1040STe for sale on Ebay at the moment for 800USD. Ataris are probably much cheaper and easier to get in Europe. Being in the USA has its good side, but this is one where I'm jealous of you Europeans
