Hi Europa, What I did was I installed the test version of a modern day authoring tool and copied its basic elements into Impact and used FM for record keeping. Because these hyped software packages add a lot of overhead, but deep beneath they don't contain anything you couldn't replicate with a graphical outliner and a database. |

@68040: Wow! That sounds like you repurposed it for a real neat tool (maybe for more budding writers?)

I'll gladly post my finished Impact templates (to the Garden maybe?) once I got myself out the chaos that engulfs us all right now. As far as the FM sources are concerned, the original author expressly forbade me to post them or even reference his name, when talking about it. He wants to stay anonymous, period and there is nothing I can do about it.

I used to use MacWrite II for reports, but don't do a lot of writing these days. Nisus Writer is another word processor that I recall had loyal fans, although personal experience is limited. The file format was unusual in that the data fork was just plain text, while formatting info was stored in the resource fork. For plain text duties though, I regularly use BBEdit Lite. Sometimes just as a notepad, sometimes to handle large text files, such as logs (no 32k limit like Simpletext). BBEdit's powerful sea rch and replace capability is great for sucking the info out of such files. It's also makes a good stab at reading other file formats.

On a sidenote: I used to be concerned with the lack of post-reform German spellcheckers for 68k systems, but seeing what a denglified (=crude mix of English and German verbs) and genderfied gibberish my mother's tongue has become, I've decided not to write anymore books in that "language". German nouns have a random genus (the grammatical "sex") assigned to them, which Genderspeak tries to neuter*_lize through "verbification" of the word. So Pedestrians turn into "foot walkers", Employes become "employed ones" and so on all the way down to "Janitors" turning into Janitorians (or something along that line :O ) A small academic elite has decided to push that through and even so nobody I ever met on the street speaks this way, all the mainstream media have picked it up. So its just a matter of time until it becomes mandatory, which at last frees me from the need to update my spell engines to present day German.

@68040 That would be cool to see the templates you used! @ovalking That's an interesting way to store text files, but it also makes a lot of sense. I'll have to look into that word processor more!
