To get 7.6.1 onto a 3400c, you're going to have to either find a 3400c 7.6.1 CD, or install it from another machine. I do not think any Macintosh with a firewire port will allow you to install Mac OS 7.6.1. You would have to find a beige PCI Power Mac, such as a 7300, 7600, 8500, 9500, 8600, 9600, and do a full install through one of those machines. Alternatively, you *may* be able to do such an install onto a disk image through Basilisk on an OS X machine. I've never done it, but it might work. Very big project though. |

What I did was install the universal copy of 7.6 and then the update to 7.6.1 on a zip drive....I use that now and it works fine on my 2400c (mini-3400c of sorts) b

One trick I used to install 7.6.1 for a powerbook was to remove the 2.5in drive install it in to an external enclosure. Plug that drive into a mac (mini) with a usb port and installed 7.6 on to the drive then put the 7.6.1 update on the drive. Reintalled and ran the update. (I may be wrong on the update, it's been a while.) I installed whatever additional software using a zip or copying the installers to the 2.5 hdd and installing from there. having an external 2.5in case, I made a disc image and if I needed to reinstall just copy the image and I'm good to go.

The Apple software downloads, has a 7.6.1 update specific to the 3400. bill

The 3400c uses a custom version of 7.6 which is a earlier version with a modified System file and a 3400 Enabler added in. The 7.6.1 update for the 3400c effectively reverses all of this and updates the laptop to 7.6.1....The universal system works, AS LONG as its 7.6.1 and not just 7.6 Trust me, I have it running on my 2400c as we speak. b
