New here but couldn't find another thread that dealt with this problem so... I've been trying to help a local charity (Women's Institute) squeeze a little more life out of their Performa 6400 (MacOS 7.5.3). Yesterday, I replaced the original monitor with a 15" flatscreen, and that worked fine. I'd also bought two sticks of RAM off eBay, simply described as: Micron MT9LD872G-5 X 64MB 168-pin EDO DIMM Memory I found the RAM slots (eventually), pulled out the original 16mb, and pushed in the new 128mb. But the 'About this Mac' section still shows 16mb. What do I need to do before the computer recognises the new RAM? I'm assuming I've fitted it correctly otherwise it wouldn't work? Many thanks for your advice! |

You don't have to do anything special to get memory to work. If your memory physically fits but is unrecognized, then you probably have incompatible memory. Try buying some memory from OWC - they're Mac-centric and guarantee their memory will work in your system for a lifetime. They have 64mb modules for $13... http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/5MD064MB/ The 6400 can only recognize a maximum of 64mb modules, and can only have a maximum of 128mb of memory.

It's worth trying just reseating the ram. I have been suprised sometime how hard you have to push the sticks to get them seated. What's wierd is I thought this model had 8 MB soldered on and that's what I thought it would show if the RAM wasn't recognized.

Hmm.. I'm not familiar with System 7 - do you think it could have shown 16mb because of the Virtual Memory?

Don't forget that the 6400 has 8mb of onboard RAM. That could account for some of what the system is seeing.
