I installed 7.6 on a Mac IIfx then installed OT 1.1.2 and AppleShare Client 3.8.3. After 3.8.3 the system basically came to a screeching halt; folders/files opened verry slowly (many seconds) if they opened at all. Even closing a folder was very slow. I restarted from the 7.6 CD, wiped the HD partition, and reloaded 7.6 and then the 7.6.1 update, but am loathe to try AppleShare 3.8.3 again, even though it might make my IIfx able to connect to an Intel iMac. Any clues about the problem? |

There could be several things at work slowing down your computer. If at one time it was configured to be part of a network and it is no longer attached to that network, it could be wasting a good resources looking for the network that does not exist. If you have turned on file sharing, it takes some time for the hard drive to create a "sharing database" of files and folders, which will result it the computer running slowly until that task completes. bill

Thanks Bill, sorry it took so long for me to reply. I reinstalled AppleShare Client 3.8.3 and have had no problems...dunno what went wrong the first time. Now the IIfx and the Intel iMac can talk nicely together.

It's great, except that for the Intel iMac (OS 10.4.10) to see the IIfx I have to have Shareway IP running on the IIfx. The IIfx sees the Intel iMac fine without Shareway, go figure. Same is true between my G3 iMac (OS 9.2.2) and the Intel Mac. I'm beginning to think it's basically magic.

Yes I've noticed that OS X won't connect to classic AppleShare file servers, only works the other way around.

Yeah, I was networking both ways just fine with 10.3.x, but Apple removed the AppleTalk sharing capabilities from 10.4. Until I discovered this site and AppleShare 3.8.3, I was stuck, but at least I can share files in one direction now.

Speaking of which, AppleShare 3.8.3 is one of those things that requires 7.6.x (it will not install in 7.5.x).

At least one way to have the OS 10.4.x machine connect to a non 10.4 Mac is to have ShareWay IP active on the non 10.4 Mac. Costs $39 from opendoor.com/shareway. Worth the price if you want to share files in both directions.

Wasn't ShareWay IP licenced by Apple and included on some OS9 install CD's? I have about 5 different OS9 CDs... I am going to check.

Shareway does Macintosh file sharing over TCP/IP instead of AppleTalk. This makes pre OS X systems with FileSharing turned on just show up on OS X 10.4.x. with out any extra fiddling around needed. It works all the way back to System 7.1 and with 68k systems so it can easily put old Macs on new networks. A version of Shareway was included with OS 9 and is why OS 9 systems connect to OS X (10.4 anyway) networks so easily. bill
