Off Topic Discussion / Free Speech

Quote from: "Minimalist"
Be careful: Germany does not want to forget. It is actually the contrary: nazi concentration camps are open in Germany too (take Dachau, near Munich, for instance), and many other monuments in Berlin have been built as a memory of the holocaust. The point here is remembering how dreadful humanity can be; the Nazi party has done horrible things, but Germans are taught to live with their history, and to learn from these mistakes. The point of forbidding the nazi flags or other nazi-related expressions is not to forget what they mean, but it is instead way to not condone the racist ideas they convey (since all these symbols are being re-used all over the world by racist/extreme right-wing organisations). I am not German, although I live in Germany. I do not know where you are from, Minimalist, and I do not want to criticise your statements which were probably not meant to be offensive, but I believe that another version of the facts had to be exposed. |

Operating System / Help: formating hfs+ drives using os 7.6 drive setup
June 26, 2006, 23:31 |
Apart from the HFS+ / 2Gb HFS limit, Drive Setup not recognizing the drive makes me thinking that maybe your disk isn't Apple branded. In that case you should use the appropriate software driver that came with the it. If you do not have it, I would suggest Hard Disk Toolkit from FWB, or Silverlining (used by some LaCie drives if I recall correctly). |

Hardware / 10 Base Ethernet

That card has both BNC (10 Base 2) and RJ45 (10 Base T // Cat. 5 cable). The seller seems to claim compatibility with Mac OS, so it should work with your configuration. You can connect to your actual network, but without additional equipment (a switch if I recall?) you'll slow everything down to 10 Mbits/s instead of 100 Mbits/s with that card... |

Classifieds / Powerbook 520c on ebay Italy
June 17, 2006, 18:49 |
HI Guys! There is someone selling a PB 520C here in Italy. It has a battery, charger, 20Mb RAM. I have inquiered about software and other accessories. I already own a copy of Mac OS 7.6 at home in case of need, and I was wondering whether the Powerbook is worth the "about 60$" requested (it has very few scratches and has been used very little, as states the owner here: http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8826609793)... I know the PB can be easily upgraded (TFT screen with more colours, and PPC603 CPU) if needed... If only that PCMCIA module revision C was to be found somewhere... Anyway, what's your opinion? |

Software / Revised Internet Explorer
June 15, 2006, 14:47 |
You cannot reverse engineer a program as complex as IE!!! Besides, I bet Microsoft would not agree... I am as frustrated as everyone when it comes to OS7 browsers. I believe the only alternative we have is convincing the iCab programmer to keep supporting OS7 in his new iCab 3 release if possible... Even if that means eliminating the Unicode support in this hypothetical "Mac OS 7.x" version. |

Software / Mac OS 7 Print Server
June 06, 2006, 23:41 |
I'm a university student in Belgium, and I have just inherited a two old Macs (a PWM 7600 and a Performa 5200). Since my needs for prints of any sort have greatly increased in those years, I am considering to buy an used B&W laser printer via Ebay to replace the color inkjet for B&W pages. I would like to set it up on one of the old Macs (the 7600, that has an Ethernet port), that should work as a printer server. I would like the server to allow Mac OS an Mac OS X connections, and possibly Windows too, although the latter is not a priority. Is that feasable? If that is the case, what software do I need? Is it possible to share both printers (knowing the other is an Epson SC740, with Mac serial port, but of course no ethernet)? And lastly, this might not be the perfect forum for this, but should you have a hint on which printer to choose, that would be gratly appreciated  Thank you for the reply ,momo |

Software / System 7 browsers
May 28, 2006, 17:47 |
Hi Guys! If you need a Mozilla-based browser, the last available one for Classic Mac OS software is WamCOM: http://wamcom.org/latest-131/. I have not tested it on Mac OS 7 yet, so take this as a hint. iCab 2.9.9a also works, and is the last Classic-OS browser to date...its rendering is poor, however. The new version (beta 3) works with most websites, but is incredibly slow even on my G3 on Mac OS 9, and requires OS 8.5 for Unicode support... Maybe we could ask the author to provide a "non-unicode" version for older PPC systems... It's quite unlikely, but who knows? On the other side, has anyone tried adding the Unicode extensions from Mac OS 8.5 to its older system? I am just a bit disappointed: Mac OS 7.6.1 remains pretty usable on my old computer (PPC 7500/100), but the lack of a decent browser is getting really annoying, more than anything else so far... |
