Operating System / Re: Finally! 7.6.1 in my native language on my 8600.
March 01, 2026, 17:13 |
I am impressed by your patience and effort to get 7.6.1 on the 8600 in your native language. I fam sure I would have tossed in the towel, before ever reaching the goal. 7.6.1 really is very snappy on the 8600 and I would guess the result made the effort worthwhile. My 8600 introduced me to powerful graphics and video tools and helped me with skills I find myself still using. I recall only Japan and France as being noted for big involvement in Apple computers and software. However I do also recall online running into Apple involved folks from all sorts of places that seemed surprising to me. In the 50s and 60s the Netherlands were considered in the vanguard of electronics at least here in the US. I bought a cassette tape player in the early 60s, when 8-tracks were all the rage. If I remember correctly it was a Norelco, which was also the brand of my first electric razor. In the era before huge multi-national companies I wondered what kind of company makes razors and cassette decks. |

Emulation / Re: Mendelson's Classic emulators.
February 28, 2026, 21:20 |
The problem with Mendelson's package and OCLP is due to input. When running a system updated using OCLP, neither the mouse nor keyboard is recognized. On Intel Macs, Apple was using USB 1.1 for keyboard and mouse, then at some point the deprecated USB 1.1 and started using USB 2. OCLP adds a patch allowing newer systems to still be able to use USB 1.1 connected keyboards and mice. I have very scarce knowledge on such things, but it would be my guess the problem with Mendelson's emulator packages on a system installed using OCLP is do to some fault/shortcoming in the USB patch from the OCLP install. There of course may be other issues at work, but it is hard (well impossible) to sort out what all might be non-working when you have no working input. I believe that DosDude1's patchers do not add any USB patchers to those installs, which allows Mendelson's emulator packages to still function correctly. |

Emulation / Mendelson's Classic emulators.
February 27, 2026, 14:45 |
I have been using Mendelson's prepackaged emulations apps on OS X for a good while and they do an excellent job. Mendelson makes it clear that his packages do not work on Intel Macs that have been upgraded to unsupported newer versions using the OpenCore Legacy Patcher. I of course always try things that are not supposed to work, and I can confirm that indeed Mendelson's emulation packages do not work with OCLP. Prior to the OCLP project unsupported updates were possible using patches from DosDude1 (dosdude1 dot com). With the total failure of my 2011 MacBook Pro, I have gone back to using my 2010 MBP and I moved it from High Sierra up to Catalina using dosdude's patcher. I can report that Mendelson's emulations packages work just fine when running on systems using Dosdude1's patchers. Interestingly the SheepShaver based OS 9 emulating PPC hardware runs much faster than the Basilisk based OS8 and OS7.6 systems. So Intel hardware can emulated PPC hardware better than it can emulated 680x0 hardware? I would have thought the 68k processor would be easier to emulate than PPC hardware. |

Off Topic Discussion / Re: This is Minnesotans in a nut shell.

It has been a surprisingly warm winter here, with very little snow. I hate snow shoveling, so the lack of snow works well for me, but the farmers need the moisture it provides for spring planting. I was out yesterday visiting friends on my electric scooter, which is an unusual thing do in February in Minnesota. Strong communities make for a nice place to live. Neighboring towns, like New Ulm, Kilkenny, Heidelburg, Norseland, and New Sweden tend to remind everyone that we are all immigrants and we need to support each other. So whether it is ice and snow, or just ICE we deal with it as a tight knit community. It is not much different from the support members provide to each other in the System7Today community. |

Hardware / Re: Wireless Networking a Powerbook 1400CS/166
February 08, 2026, 15:32 |
Macintoshgarden has an extensive collection of Orinoco drivers including some manuals which may prove helpful. Generally speaking Orinoco cards are very compatible with Macs that have PCMCIA slots. I did have an Orinoco Silver card working on a PB 5300ce. Later version of system software with AirPort compatibility are compatible with Orinoco cards out of the box. System 7.6 will require manually adding the needed drivers and software. These cards are getting old, so it might be worth checking to see if the card is still good. A Mac with a PCMCIA slot on OS 8.6+ should just see and use the card. You could also do a temp install of a newer OS on your 1400 to check if the card just shows up. (A working card should also just show up on a Windows or Linux laptop with a PCMCIA slot.) |

This link from Tinkerdifferent lists all the cache modules for PowerMac machines including pictures of the modules and descriptions of the various chip used in them. (I imagine that link requires a newer browser.) |

Operating System / Re: Finally! 7.6.1 in my native language on my 8600.

PM5500s in black are pretty rare in the USA, Apple did not sell them here. We got the white ones and they were popular and common in schools. Worth a fortune is relative. Even in 2001/02 the fx 840, and 8600 were valued and while I am sure are worth much more today they brought an excellent price at the time. I do not tend toward collecting things. The //fx was my youngest's first trying at audio work and he was onto a G4 by the time it was sold. The 840 had video inputs and was being used as a display for a few different game consoles. The 5500 was the family and homework machine and served well. But the kids were off at work or college and the machines were just taking up space. I had picked up a QuickSilver around that time. It was a real piece of junk, but it tied me over until I got the PM G5. The 8600 is one of my all time favorites. It was rugged, expandable, easy to work on and very capable. I was mad that Apple which had for years at least hinted that all PowerMacs would run their new OS. Then boom no only a few would make the cut. (Over all I have always been a bit miffed that Apple made decisions about what was a suitable "user experience" when it always seemed to me that the suitability of the UX is something that should be decided by the user. |

Operating System / Re: Finally! 7.6.1 in my native language on my 8600.

I purchased a used 8600 from the local college. It was Mach V version with the 604ev processor. I still do not really understand the differences. I believe that model originally shipped as either a 250Mhz or a 300Mhz. Over time I did pick up a 350Mhz daughter card from the PM9600. I got the system install disks with the machine and it had shipped with System7.6.1. That was a long time back, but I am pretty sure 7.6.1 was the oldest OS it would run. It was my first encounter running 7.6.1 and I really liked it. I was just getting into capturing video and it was the first machine I had that was really capable of doing a decent job at the task. System 7.6.1 could really be slimmed down to where there was very little background activity to disrupt the capture. I was very aggravated that it did not make the cut off for OS X. Although I did use some sneaky utility to get OS X installed, and from what I recall it did not run very well. BeOS R5 ran quite well and it was the last OS I used with the machine before selling it. I had by that point picked up a PM G5 which did run OS X very well and it remains in use. I sold it to a person who was interested in all of the old Apple hardware I owned at the time, and he also bought the IIfx, the Quadra840, the PM5500, along with monitors, keyboards, printers and scanners I had. The kids had all left the house and there was a lot of stuff that was just sitting around unused. |

Hardware / Re: Trying to get ethernet working on the LC III
February 04, 2026, 04:07 |
Good to hear you are having success at getting the ethernet up and working, well at least being able to rule out choke points. Networking always vexes me, and I am content to just consider it magic. I run through a thousand permutations and perhaps I get lucky it works and I make a note to just never change it. Animal sacrifice along with assorted incantations is helpful at times too.

Off Topic Discussion / This is Minnesotans in a nut shell.

We have been having protests here, but this is not about politics. The Governor called up the National Guard to ease the tensions. The National Guard duly showed up bringing hot coffee and donuts, to ease the tensions of course. That is just so typical Minnesota. |

Emulation / Re: UTM has been updated.
January 19, 2026, 17:20 |
Good news for emulation on iPad and older intel Mac hardware, UTM was updated about a week ago. This update includes the latest QEMU backend as well as updated machine configurations. Included in the update machine configuration is updates for both Quadra 800 and the G3 machines. This results in big increases in speed for emulating classic MacOSes. My 2019 iPad as well as my 2015 MBP are both very usable as OS 9 as well as OS 8 machines. I have not tried System 7 yet, but I imagine it will also be quite useable. The 2015 MBP emulates the classic Mac OS very well. The trackpad and keyboard make it like using an old Powerbook. The iPad alone with its touch interface remains a bit odd to use, but with an external keyboard and mouse, it too behaves nicely and is easy to use. Getting UTM for the iPad does involve going through the store and it has a nominal cost. The Mac version is also available via the App Store, but can be downloaded and installed bypassing the store and cost. The iPad version cannot use jit because of iPad OS restrictions, but it still preforms very well. |

Software / Re: Terminal emulator for PETSCII on System 7?
January 16, 2026, 17:04 |
There is an old Commodore emulator on the Garden. Perhaps it would allow you to run Desterm or some other Commodore terminal emulator, which would connect to a Commodore BBS. SyncTerm which is open source, but for OS X which does Petscii. There is also MuffinTerm, which is not open source, but is available for OS X and iOS from the app stores, which also does Petscii. Using Desterm on the Commodore can connect to the communication module of Claris Works via a null modem cable allowing you to move data between Commodore hardware and Mac hardware going back to at least System 6.0.5. (ClarisWorks 3 requires at least 6.0.5 to use the communication module.) |

Off Topic Discussion / Surprise hiding on my mini.
January 10, 2026, 16:00 |
At some point in the past I had used the OS 9 installer from MacOS9Lives to install OS9 on the mini. I did not use use it very much and at some point I installed OS X Tiger and for a good while I have been using my OpenDoc applications in "Classic". Although I am sure a messy desktop is strictly a user problem, I have always found that OS X makes it easier to keep the desktop clutter free. I was cleaning up a pile of desktop Icons and I came across an Apple Script icon titled "Start OS9". I was not sure how it got there or where it came from, but when I double clicked it the Mini restarted and came up in OS 9. So anyway I have been using the mini for the last year or so, oblivious to the fact that I had a dual boot system. I had been thinking about backing stuff up and doing a drive with partitions (the right way?) so I could run either OS 9 or OS X and possibly even adding 7.6.1. I bought an external drive just for such a purpose. This is how messing with vintage tech fills all your free space with bits and and pieces of gear. |
