Operating System / Keyboard shortcuts

Quote from: "dpaanlka" I'm not into all that apperance modding crap. The Chicago font is there for a reason, it matches best with Mac OS 7. Is it really worth making your menubar 10x uglier to shave 0.5 seconds off the selection of a command? Okay, we're getting off topic now, but these are strong words and I have to respond. Just for the record, I agree with you 100% about appearance modding. I've never liked or used that "Kaleidoscope" control panel; I never upgraded to Mac OS 8 because I didn't like the "Charcoal" font and all those beveled menus and windows. Don't get me started about how much I don't like all the slick appearance modifications in Mac OS X. I still use System 7 is because I love and prefer the interface. So even though I made a small compromise, I feel that I am totally in agreement with you on this point. |

Operating System / Keyboard shortcuts

Quote from: "dpaanlka" Thats actually the one feature I hate because it's so un-mac like. Underlined menu bars? Yuck. Thankfully, it can be turned off in the Speed Doubler control panel. I agree, I don't like the appearance of the underlined letters in the menu bar either. But once I started using the keyboard to access certain commands, I saved so much tiresome back-and-forth from the mouse to the keyboard that I decided it was worth it. I used the "Greg's Buttons" control panel to select another menu bar font that was more appealing with the underlines. My work flow has really improved. So although it may not be for everyone, if you're looking for keyboard shortcuts you should at least give that feature of Speed Doubler a try and decide for yourself how useful it is. Even if it's ugly. |

Remember that you can easily add your own keyboard shortcuts for almost anything you can think of with the "KeyQuencer" control panel, which interfaces nicely with AppleScript as well. There are other macro programs for System 7, but I'm most familiar with KeyQuencer (it's shareware), and it works great. Over the years I've saved myself a lot of mouse mileage by adding keyboard shortcuts for frequently used actions, like changing the labels of files, etc. The only problem I never could solve with KeyQuencer was how to send files to the trash in the Finder, but it looks like I finally have a solution. The magnificent SpeedDoubler allows you to access everything in the menubar using only the keyboard, which has also helped reduce my mouse mileage. |

Operating System / Using System 7 with large hard disks? Partition the drives.
May 25, 2006, 14:59 |
Quote from: "jens" Are you able to use the bigger partitions with System 7? The configuration that I described above works perfectly for me. My Power Mac 5400 had no difficulty recognizing the replacement 40 GB hard drive (a standard 5400 RPM 3.5" hard drive from Western Digital) and the three partitions that I described above have worked flawlessly for the past 5 years. Each partition appears on the desktop as a separate disk. The 2 GB partition is my startup disk, with all my applications and many smaller documents on it. The two 17 GB partitions appear as separate disks on the desktop just below the startup disk. It works great, and it was very easy to set up. |

It appears that there is an easy solution to the lack of a Command-Delete keyboard shortcut in the System 7 Finder. There are two extensions, "Hidden Finder Features" and "Finder Extensions Enabler," that claim to add a Command-Delete keyboard shortcut to the System 7 Finder. I have downloaded both from the web but I have not yet installed them. Both extensions can be found by searching for them on the web. If one of these extensions works, it will solve one of my long-standing annoyances with the System 7 Finder. (When you are trying to weed large numbers of files, it is a pain to have to drag them to the trash with the mouse.) I don't know why I never thought to search for such an extension before. |

Software / Complete list of software I use with System 7.6.1
May 18, 2006, 01:47 |
I have been using System 7 continuously since it was released in 1991 (although I recommend that 68k Mac users stick with System 6 if possible). I have been using my latest machine, a Power Macintosh 5400, continuously since I bought it almost 10 years ago in July 1996. I used System 7.5.5 for years until I finally upgraded to 7.6.1 in 2000, and I have been happily using it ever since. I love the look on people's faces when I tell them that I still use System 7 at home! I thought that I would reproduce the following list of applications that I have used with System 7.6.1 (this list was originally posted on my web site). I hope other users will find it useful to see which applications are compatible with System 7.6.1. In some cases (for example, Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat) newer versions of the software are also compatible with 7.6.1, but I have not bothered to upgrade. I would reiterate Dan's suggestion that everyone who is using System 7 should install Speed Doubler 8, which I have been using for years. It is essential. Other highlights are the "Program Switcher" extension listed below, which gives application switching functionality equivalent to Mac OS X and Windows, and "KeyQuencer," a great macro utility. For desktop pictures, I prefer the BackSplash II extension listed below to the DeskPicture extension that Dan recommends. I am an enthusiastic and expert user of System 7 and I will be happy to answer any questions about any of the software listed below. Operating System / Using System 7 with large hard disks? Partition the drives.
May 18, 2006, 01:17 |
As noted in the System 7 Today FAQ, one limitation of System 7 is that it uses HFS rather than HFS+ to format hard disks, which as Dan says, "makes terrible and inefficient use of hard drive space by making the minimum size of a file a percentage of the hard drive size." One way to alleviate this problem is to partition large hard disks. I use a Power Macintosh 5400, which I have been using continuously since I bought it almost 10 years ago in July 1996. The machine originally shipped with a 1.6 GB hard disk. Around the year 1999 the hard disk began crashing repeatedly, forcing me to reformat the drive multiple times. The drive finally died in 2001. (A note to owners of old Macs: your hard drive will die eventually, so be prepared and back up regularly!) I replaced the original 1.6 GB hard disk with a 40 GB hard disk. To avoid wasting disk space by using such a relatively massive drive with HFS, I formatted the disk with three partitions: one 2 GB partition with the contents of my original drive and most of my smaller files, and two 17 GB partitions for larger files and scratch disks. I have found this solution to work fairly well in lowering the minimal file size to an acceptable size. The minimum file size will be even smaller if you use more partitions. |

Software / Most missed applications?
May 18, 2006, 00:12 |
Quote from: "lostprocess" I expect a Mozilla port is far beyond my abilities for the foreseeable future, but I too am very interested in (technically) what it would take to bring a modern, usable browser to System 7. I'm not sure if Mozilla would be my first choice, though, because of all the overhead the user interface brings along. If you are interested in talking to a man who sat down and wrote his own web browser for Mac OS Classic, get in touch with David T. Pierson, who wrote the WannaBe web browser, which I still use every day. (WannaBe works great in System 7, by the way.) David's web site for WannaBe is below: http://mindstory.com/wb2/ |
