One of these days, I'd love to get a 9500. If you ever decide to sell yours, let me know.

I'd even go as far as saying that I'd pay 100 bucks for that machine, but for $350 I could buy a real nice G4 machine. I really only have the old stuff for novelty's sake.

First off, LMAO. Great read for sure...

Second, System 7 was great for its time...memory management is great, reliability is fantastic, and its very streamlined. I love being able to plug in any IDE drive with X amount of capacity and the OS just formats it ( obviously there's a file system limit for the max size of an 'allocation unit' or 'cluster' so my 80GB drive will have TONS of wasted space) . However, things evolve...you certainly dont see any brand spankin' new apps on floppies, or on cassette tapes. System 7 just doesn't offer the same flexibility as X when it comes to present-day apps. Development is great with a FREE integrated IDE which provide thousands of native OS GUI modules, objects and methods for easily creating any app for X. Secondly, yeah your office might have fit onto a Zip Disk back in the day, but as apps become more user-friendly, less obtrusive and supporting 64-bit processors that are out now, that all takes space. Same way with games -- Doom for DOS was alot less of a 'space hog' than Doom III for PC, but you get a better experience. Same way with X.

Saying that something is 'crappy' doesnt really offer any thoughts on anything. Java was created by C++ programmers to offer a web presence, offer a built-in GUI support, and be platform-independent. How is that crappy? C++ / C doesnt offer any of these...

System 7 is great, and still is , but I only break out my collection of 16 or so macs every-so-often for nostalgia. In fact, I restored a mac portable, and I rarely even use it--there's only so much that 7 will do on a 68000.

Hello! It's  been a while, and many things have happened. First off, after going through two logic boards and processors for my 9600, I decided to throw in the towel and donate it. So I did.

I now have the following System 7 Ready devices:

*Powerbook 1400cs (400Mhz G3)
*Powerbook 2400 (240Mhz G3 [Cache broken])
*Performa 6116CD (400Mhz G3 Sonnet)
*Centris 660AV (working on getting it clock-chipped to 33Mhz)

I'm also beginning to get back INTO Apple IIgs hardware again.

Around eight years ago, I used to work on (daily) making programs in Apple Basic in my free time after school in my grade school. I ended up getting this computer, and one day I walked into my parents house, and it was gone.

I was saddened but now would like to get an Apple IIgs again. Much has changed in the Apple IIgs world. There are now ethernet cards available, TCP/IP stacks available with DHCP support, and ability to have hard drives (via CF drives or through 2.5 or 3.5 inch drives) in the system.

I also decided to get some real nice PCs going too:

*Added a MythTV computer /Server, kinda like an open-source TiVo system. Very nice system with a 320GB drive just for movies.

*Also added a FX-60 system (dual core 2.6Ghz ) with 1GB ram and a GeForce 8600GTS and a 20 inch widescreen monitor.

I guess so, and its rediculous that there are *NO* avenues around here to find good old macs.

I suppose ebay is a place where things like partially working computers and such realm I suppose.

I will stick around. I wont be gone...I am keeping my 2400c/240 and parts machines around...and the 9600 is getting a face-lift with a new motherboard and CPU from a late 9600. I still love OS 7.6.1, I believe it has a HUGE amount of leverage still even after 11+ years of use.

I appreciate all of  your help and guidence. I suppose I need to find a person who *HAS* working macs to sell me some in order to convert my frustration into old-world computing bliss!

note: I have attempted to build a very cool and super-fast vintage apple computer to use for daily tasks using 7.6.1 or 8.6, but every time I have attemped, I have failed. I still have a few leads to go on with fixing the 9600, but I've tried most everything I know to do.

thats intresting, i pressed the cuda button and reset the nvram, and it seemed to default to 640x480 on the starmax...

I guess I'll check out the old card and get a new adaptor.

It worked, and now it doesnt. I even bought a MAC radeon 7000 and I still get nothing that resembles the boot screen on my 9600. I tried the *SAME* card on my Starmax and it works perfectly. I used one particular PCI slot, and I get a moment of time where the screen recognizes some sync, and then it falls back into sleep mode.

The 7000 works great in my starmax, but doesnt work in my 9600 which I was planning to use.

I havent had real good luck with macs lately :(
