Software / 68k vnc patches ?
November 02, 2011, 18:52 |
I have not tested them yet, but the files found below claim to be 68k vnc patches for ChromiVNC 3.4a5 Server: http://amcg.ese.ic.ac.uk/~adrian/vnc/ I'll firing up (hopefully NOT literally!) the Quadra this evening to see if I can get them working. |

Operating System / Using disk images on a large drive with System 7.6
June 24, 2007, 01:49 |
I use a Duo 2300c with a 20GB internal drive and System 7.6.1. I don't have multiple partitions, instead I have several disk image files which I use to manage lots and lots of small files efficiently and effectively. Only the system folder and a copy of Disk Copy for mounting the images is directly on the hard drive. Every application and file are on a disk image. I also use disk images to mount images of CD-ROMs without a CD drive attched, again without a big efficiency hit. I have not noticed any significant performance penalty associated with this approach. BTW, if anyone is planning on installing a modern IDE drive into something as ancient as a Duo, I recommend obtaining the proper brackets first. Doing it without the right brackets, like I did, is a bit risky, since it requires shimming the drive to "friction fit" it into place. That was the last drive that is ever going into that Duo frame. |

Emulation / I wonder if "Intel Inside" makes a difference
May 21, 2007, 20:01 |
On a recent MacBook Pro with 10.4.x, I was only able to get SheepShaver working with 9.0.4. I tried several other classic OS version to no avail. <shrug> |

Off Topic Discussion / System 6
February 12, 2007, 21:54 |
I have System 6 still running on my "silent" LC (No HDD, 10MB RAM, RamDisk+, boot from floppy or ZIP 100). For a simplified and efficient computing experience, I highly recommend it. Apple keeps moving their archives around, but 6.0.8L is still there, last I checked. My only problem with a PB 100 today is getting a battery for it. Good luck with your adventure! Oh yes, if you aready have a modern computer, you can run system 6 under mini vMac. |

Hardware / new Duo keyboards
February 12, 2007, 21:43 |
When looking for Duo keyboards, new or used, try to get a "Rev F" version. I believe they were standard on the 2300. Highly recommended. I didn't realize how bad my 230 keyboard was until I got a Rev F. I hear Rev E's are nearly as good. I got my Rev F new at www.powerbookguy.com once upon a while ago. I've also seen good ones on otherwise not working 2300c's. |

Operating System / Startup Control Panel
February 12, 2007, 21:34 |
You are both doing better than I faired. I had a single drive with 3 partitions (2 HFS and 1 HFS+) that held OS 7.6.1, 8.1, and 8.6. When booted into 7.6, I could "see" the 8.1 system but not the 8.6 partition on the HFS+ partition. Regardless, a trip into 7.6 was one-way. I was never able to boot into 8.1 with 7.6 installed. Delete 7.6 and I could boot just fine into 8.1 or 8.6 and bounce back and forth to my heart's content. I did like 7.6 and my solution was to create a 7.6 bootable disk image that I could copy onto a RAMDisk and reboot into 7.6. When I shutdown, 7.6 was "gone" and it would boot normally into 8.1 As long as on of the partitions was HFS, I could access files with one of the other OS versions. It wasn't ideal, but 7.6 is REALLY fast from a RAMDisk. I never tried an alternative utility for switching systems. |

Emulation / 2.3.1 works in 10.4 on Intel
February 09, 2007, 14:44 |
It wasn't easy to get working, but there is a version of SheepShaver out there that runs under OS X on Intel. However, I was unable to get it to run anything other that 9.0.4. The GUI part of speeshaver crashes frequently. Mac-on-mac I haven't been able to run at all. |

Software / Any suugestions for CD burning?
February 09, 2007, 14:34 |
I used to burn CDs on my Duo 2300c using Toast 5 under OS 8.6, but I haven't been able to find a similar solution for System 7. It is not a critical function, but I would find it convenient if I could continue to do so on occasion. Any suggestions? Loverofmusic |

New Member Welcome / Going where no Duo has gone before ...
February 09, 2007, 14:25 |
Hello fellow System 7ers. After pushing my poor Duo 2300c to run OS 8.6 daily, I think it is time to take a step or two back and restore some balance to its computing life. Sure, it was cool to run iTunes for OS 8 on a 100 Mhz 603e, but it wasn't something I made much use of. I look forward to sharing my adventures and learning some along the way. Loverofmusic |
