1 Off Topic Discussion / Choosing the Right NEMA 34 Stepper Motor
September 17, 2025, 10:26
Hey everyone,

I’m working on a new CNC project and considering using a NEMA 34 stepper motor for the motion system. I’ve done some research, but I’m still a bit unsure about a few things and would love some advice from the community.

Here’s what I know so far:

NEMA 34 just refers to the faceplate size (3.4 inches), not torque or power output.

These motors typically offer higher torque compared to NEMA 23, which seems perfect for heavier loads or larger gantries.

They usually require higher current drivers, so I’ll need to match my stepper driver and power supply carefully.

Here’s what I’d like to know from you guys:

Torque vs. Speed: How do NEMA 34 steppers perform at higher speeds compared to NEMA 23? Is there a significant drop-off in usable torque?

Power Supply: For a typical 4A NEMA 34 stepper, what voltage do you recommend to get smooth performance without overheating?

Applications: For CNC routers or plasma tables, is NEMA 34 overkill or just right for reliability and precision?

Any recommendations for reliable brands or driver pairings (e.g., Leadshine, Gecko, etc.) would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance — looking forward to learning from your experience!
