Operating System / 7.6 IS fast...with some minor irritation
April 05, 2011, 16:45 |
(Sounds like an itch-cream commercial) I was successful last Autumn in running 7.6.1 on my 8500/120/G3. And I even have it installed on a SheepShaver emulator. It runs AS PROMISED: FAST. When you have "enough" hardware, it is quite nice. However, one aspect of both 6 and 7 that I can't bloody stand is the need to hold the mouse button down while browsing through a dock menu, etc. It is annoying, and my least favorite thing about Classic Mac OS. For what it WAS, though, compared to Win3.1/Win95...night and day. |

New Member Welcome / Greetings from Buffalo, NY

Welcome to the group, fella! S7T is a GREAT place to find answers and solutions to Macs of yesterday. EVERYONE on here has been honest (I've made more than a few private purchases from other members and have NEVER been "burned"), friendly, and exceptionally intelligent when posed with a question. Even though the emphasis is on System 7, the software hosted here is excellent even on OS 9.2.2. Happy Holidays! John |

Outlook Express 5.0.6 works very well in Classic. I use it DAILY on my Power Mac 8500 at my office on our (coporate) network. We use port 2525 for outbound mail, and 5.0.6 works flawlessly. |

Hardware / "Dreadful iBook"
October 01, 2010, 02:14 |
I have since upgraded the OS to 10.1.5...and the 10.2 CD should be here tomorrow. OS 9.2.2 is still on it as well...however...I rather enjoy the beauty of the AQUA interface. But, 9 is still nice to have. (I'm running it right now in Classic mode for Outlook Express...waiting for an email from my company's president). Now here's a thought: I have a chance to buy a "new" used Wallstreet Mac CHEAP. It works, too. Could this Mac laptop be downgraded to run 7.6.1? Hmmmm. |

Classifieds / Power Macintosh 8600/300 for sell

I agree Breetie. One man's trash...another man's treasure...and vice-versa. Now...perhaps if it were a TAM new in the box...then I could see that kind of money. As much as I adore my 8500/120/G3 (with 336 MB of RAM, 2 hard drives, USB/Firewire card, fast SCSI card), I wouldn't even joke about wanting $350 for it. I think one of the previous posts was right on the money: keep it and enjoy. |

My 8500 is 10 times that machine, and it has a value of NIL! Maybe if it were a Mac Pro, fella! |

Hardware / New used iBook
September 26, 2010, 01:46 |
About a week ago, I purchased an iBook SE Graphite off of eBay for $32. It is dead stock...except for having OSX 10.0.4 on it. The Apple Store at the Walden Galeria checked it thoroughly (for FREE, I might add) and it passed with flying colors. |

Classifieds / PowerMac 7100 System 7.5 CD for sale
September 01, 2010, 03:01 |
The title describes it best. The CD is a solid 3 out of 5. I no longer need it, since I don't have a 7100 anymore. Make offer. Needs a good home. John |

Hardware / My 8500 finding a new home
August 27, 2010, 23:10 |
Hi Mac Fans... I have been a member of this group for almost 4 or 5 years now. Dan's help is always appreciated. Without getting too much into the Mac vs. PC grudgematch...my office's network has had more problems than normal...and they were/are due to a poorly configured firewall, etc. Typical Windows stuff. My secretary needed her PC to be exorcised 3 times this year. I lost my HP Pavilion...and I'm not even there that much since I am a field technician. Since I am the Lead Tech of my company, I have a great deal of autonomy and freedom to do basically whatever the hell I want to. Needing a computer at my desk, and not wishing to have more "issues", I brought my trusty 8500/120/G3 to work, and have been using it there. With a little Microsoft software (Office and Outlook), I have been able to jump back in to productivity...and have loved every minute of it. I can print to the office printers, and even listen to the local NPR station (iTunes 2.0.4). Well....this post WAS pointless...I just wanted to brag. I'm sorry. John |

Operating System / HDD Size
August 17, 2010, 23:10 |
That's what I truly enjoy about the folks that come to this website. EVERY time I've ever needed help with my beloved 8500, I ALWAYS get what I'm looking for. As far as capacity, it has a small 4GB right now...and I have no problem with running out of room. Either 2GB or 4GB would be GREAT! I appreciate the help! I recently brought my 8500 to work...our network is pretty poor, and we've had numerous issues with viruses destroying company PCs with WinXP. (I am a Windows 7 user normally). I have the luxury of using ANY computer I choose, since I am the Lead Technician. So...I vrought in my 8500...and with a little tweaking here and there, I can see the network, the printers, and my Excel spreadsheets that I created with Office 2003 and 2007 work flawlessly with Office 98 for Mac. Thanks again for the help! John |

Operating System / "New" SCSI HDDs for a Powermac 8500
August 17, 2010, 16:06 |
Hello all. DOes anyone know of a decent place to get SCSI HDDs for my 8500? Although it works just fine and both hard drives are running normally, I would like another one "just in case". THANKS! John |
