Operating System / Re: System 7 natively boots on the Mac mini G4!
December 04, 2025, 16:15 |
What an achievement! Now this is what draws us to retrocompting. It's like we've frozen time back in the era where it still felt like new and exciting things were happening and they actually are again - real achievements, unlike cynical B2B SaaS or "A.I." for your fridge. In short: Any significant advancement using outdated technology is indistinguishable from magic. |

Classifieds / Apple Extended Keyboard II (DE layout) [Spares & Repair]
December 04, 2025, 16:09 |
For sale: AEK II, DE layout. 2 missing keys. Cosmetics otherwise good for its age. Regrettably not working. It has a fault in the kb controller chip due to some corrosion, and locks up the ADB bus when connected. Still, it would do well for a restore or donor for those of us who like specially marked verbs and a single key for chevrons ![]() Photo here: https://www.thran.uk/img/aekii-de.jpeg Price is £20 + P&P (tbd) from the UK. |

Hardware / Re: BlueSCSI getting WiFi (now beta)
July 16, 2024, 15:21 |
Getting one of these in the post soon. Had to go for the external and WiFi options - who wouldn't want the novelty of playing with that on vintage machines? Will see how it goes with my Mac SE, 6200 and Amiga. I'm pretty thrilled to get all three systems covered by the one peripheral. |

Hardware / Rescue of a PowerMac 9600 and possibly more
July 04, 2024, 13:22 |
So I was attending an event in a shared office space, and the host of the event invited us to explore the dusty and extensive attic. While indulging in some spontaneous urban exploration, I discovered a beige Power Mac 9600, and not far from it was a G4- era Quicksilver Apple Cinema Display! These had been lying up here for well over two decades. I didn't get time to search further but I'd wonder if any other early PPC or 68k kit might be up there. Likely story is they belong to a firm which currently inhabits the building. Should I be honest and say I'm a collector and offer to buy them? Is there anything else I could do, asking for your experiences here? TL;DR, did you ever chance upon some old Macs still under ownership and talk the owner into selling them or giving them to you? |

Development / Re: can someone with programming knowledge port mario 64?
September 05, 2023, 13:35 |
@17lifers SDL1.2 != SDL2. The APIs aren't directly compatible. It might be possible to manually rewrite a SDL2 program to work with SDL1 but it's be a lot of tedium |

excellent work, I'll have to dial in whenever I get either my SE or the 6200 talking to the world at large how hard was it reverse-engineering the hotline protocol? |

Software / Re: Websites that work with System 7 browsers

http://www.mac.org/ - Old Mac shareware site. Last updated in 2000 and still online in this year of our Lord 2023! How's that for longevity? Has some downloads of 68K and PPC shareware for your delectation. |

Software / Bryce 3D
March 02, 2023, 13:05 |
Has anyone played with this utility? It's capable of rendering ray-traced and reflective graphical scenes. I was intrigued by it after watching LGR's video covering it. The software dates from the mid-90s, is available for Power Macintosh and supports System 7. You may easily acquire abandonware versions of it on the Internet Archive. I have recently acquired a Performa 6200 and once I get a keyboard & screen for it, looks like something to try for kicks. Though it might be a lengthy job to finish a render. |

Hardware / What I almost had (Mac LC II + display + peripheral heaven)
January 27, 2023, 21:10 |
Just sharing for commiserations. I won an eBay auction in December last year, but I couldn't get postage arranged and it was prohibitive for me to make the journey to collect it. So many things! A SCSI CD Drive, printer, kb, mouse would've been all mine. Would've been an ideal S7 machine. I'm quite fond of the LC desktops. Ah well, in another world perhaps... |

Off Topic Discussion / Re: Apple Lisa Source Code Released
January 20, 2023, 21:40 |
Quote from: wove Pretty amazing to look at the first implementation of cut copy paste and undo. I read in the article that the Lisa team put the document metaphor over the application metaphor. It makes sense that a universal cut, copy and paste would emerge from here. And yes, not that long ago Apple contributed a patch to OpenBroadcastStudio that allowed greatly accelerated video capture for OSX, which was a nice surprise. They also brought us CUPS, which means any *nix can print to anything "designed for iPhone". Good because unixen wouldn't get as much attention as Windows from the printer makers themselves. |

Off Topic Discussion / Apple Lisa Source Code Released
January 19, 2023, 23:47 |
Looks like Apple have been so kind to release the Apple Lisa sources: https://computerhistory.org/blog/the-lisa-apples-most-influential-failure/ Alas, it is behind an email form and long disclaimer. However the download link is available elsewhere for the reclusive. Maybe in 10 years we will see the System 7 sources. Who knows ![]() Edit: This is cool http://revontulet.org/2023/01/19/lisadesk.png. They didn't have to do a bit of ASCII art in the comments but they did! |

Hardware / Re: Getting a Mac SE/30 a good idea?
January 19, 2023, 13:00 |
Yeah it's highly regarded for good reason. I'd grab one even if the caps were bust. Lots of fun options, it is a great System 7 machine. It even runs A/UX. Details: https://se30forever.com/operatingsystem.html It also runs NetBSD, if you're bold and just the right amount of crazy. You can also slot in an ethernet card and get online. I'm sure some of the SE/30 owners will be happy to gloat further
