1 Operating System / 7.5.3 Network and file sharing questions
October 21, 2006, 02:00
I'll try a clean install of 7.6 on one of them, and see how it works before I install it on the others.

I want to have 7.6 on one of my Basilisk volumes so I can practice and experiment with the system at home. I only have about an hour and a half every week to work on the computers at the school.

I had some extra time on them yesterday and this morning, and spent most of it trying to find a way to get a browser onto the one that doesn't have one. It wasn't until after I came home today that I finally found a browser for it in a usable format, at evolt.org.

Two of the other ones kept crashing every time I started Netscape, and turning off the extensions didn't do any good. Finally, I tried stopping them before they finished loading the home page, and turned off Java and Java Script, and that worked. Now all but one of them are on line. They still crash now and then on some Web sites.

I'm still not getting anywhere with file and printer sharing. Patty has an XP computer and an iMac, and I can see each one's shared files on the other one, but I can't their shared files on the Power Macs, and I can't see the Power Mac shared files on either of them. I don't know what to try next.

Next time I'll try installing a browser on the one that doesn't have one, and I'll see if I can get printer sharing to work between the XP computer and the iMac. The printer is connected to the XP computer. That's the one Patty uses for her work now. This year the school switched from iMacs to XP computers for the teachers to use. The iMacs are for the students now.

2 Emulation / *.hqx and *.sit with Basilisk/XP

Have you tried opening the files manually through Stuffit rather than double clicking them in the finder?

Yes.

I also tried AlZip. I have some hqx files that I can copy onto my emulation volumes and use, and some I can't. I've been doing some research on file formats, and looked at my files with Hexplorer, and found out that:

1. The "hqx" files that I haven't been able to use aren't really hqx files.
2. The "hqx" files on some download sites are really dmg files. To use them, after you download them you have to change the hqx to dmg and open them with Disk Copy. I'm not sure if that applies to the ones I've been trying to use or not. So far I haven't found any way to transfer them unchanged to any Mac volumes.

3 Emulation / *.hqx and *.sit with Basilisk/XP

My wife has some Power Mac 5260 computers for her students to use. One has 7.5.1 and the others have 7.5.3. I'm trying to set them up for Web browsing and file sharing, fix broken parts of the systems, tune them up, and possibly update them to 7.6.

I'm using Basilisk II/JIT to emulate a Mac on my XP computer at home, to practice and experiment, before I try anything on the actual computers. I'm using 68K emulation because I haven't got PowerPC emulation working yet. One reason for that is that I haven't been able to do anything yet with *.hqx and *.sit files.

I've been able to transfer *.bin, *.sea, and *.smi files to my emulated Mac with HFVExplorer, and to use them successfully, but I'm getting nowhere with *.hqx and *.sit files. I haven't been able to transfer any *.hqx files in usable form to my emulated Mac, and I can't use any *.sit files on without Stuffit Expander. I can't get Stuffit Expander onto it, because I haven't found any copy of Stuffit Expander anywhere on the Internet, that isn't in hqx or sit format!

When I try to transfer a *.hqx file to a Mac disk or disk image with HFVExplorer, it says "hqx file header not found." If I use "raw copy, data fork," it copies something to the disk or disk image, with an hqx extension, but when I try to open it in the emulator, it says:

----

The document -- could not be opened, because the application program that created it could not be found.

Could not find a translation extension with appropriate translators.

----

I did manage to get a usable *.bin file into the emulator from a *.sit file, using a MacBinary Fork Encoding expansion with Stuffit Expander for Windows, but that didn't work with the Stuffit .sit file I found on the Internet.

Thank you for that list, Ursa.

I'm going in circles trying to get Acrobat Reader and ROM-grabber to work in my emulator. I need Stuffit for 7.5 to install them, and apparently I need Stuffit to install Stuffit. I finally found an old Stuffit installer with an hqx extension, but I haven't been able to open it up in the emulator.

Apart from that, I've been having some success running downloaded Mac applications in the emulator.

I'll be working on Patty's computers tomorrow and Friday. The first thing I want to do is get Netscape working on all of them. Two of them crash with error type 11 when I try to run Netscape. I'm going to try turning off the extensions. If that doesn't work, I'm going to go through a crash/freeze repair checklist I found on the Internet. If that doesn't work I might try installing Opera or Internet Explorer.

Next, I want to try to get file sharing working. After that I might try updating the 7.5.1 computer to 7.5.3, and then to 7.5.5.

Meanwhile, I bought a 7.6 install disk and an 8.1 install disk on ebay. I'm planning to experiment with them on my emulator before I try updating Patty's computers to 7.6.

Right now I'm emulating with Basilisk with a 68K ROM. I'd rather emulate with SheepShaver and a PowerPC rom, if I can ever find a way to get one. So far every trail has led to a dead end. Tomorrow or Friday I'll see if I can get ROM-grabber working on one of Patty's computers. I'd rather emulate with a PowerPC ROM because that's what's on Patty's computers.

More later.

I'm not sure I understand.  If you're using a PowerPC Mac (which the 6xxx series is) then you should be able to run Netscape 4.8 from Browser Central (part of this site).

Sorry! I got the browser pages mixed up. I was thinking that Browser Central was one of the places that had links to Netscape 4.05 and earlier. All those versions of Netscape have been removed from most of the sites that used to have them.

I can't use Browser Central's Netscape 4.8 without upgrading the systems on Patty's computers, from 7.5.3 to 8.1, and I don't want to do that without being absolutely sure I won't break them. I'm even afraid to try upgrading the one with 7.5.1, to 7.5.3. I'm not sure what happens when you try to upgrade a system when system files have been moved and renamed, and the name of the hard drive is ",". I'll need to do a lot of experimenting on a virtual Mac, before I feel safe trying that. Meanwhile, I need a browser that runs on 7.5.

Yesterday I finally found Navigator 4.05 at www.evolt.org.

The Navigator link at sillydog didn't work, but I found 4.03 at Browser Central. Thanks!

Now I'm wondering about upgrading the system to 7.6.1. I can try it on my virtual Mac first!

The students have renamed the hard drive on three of the computers. I renamed it back to Macintosh HD on two of them, but I can't rename it on the other one. When I click on the name, and click again, the name doesn't go into entry mode, like it does on the others.

If system files have been moved and renamed, will it break the systems if I try to upgrade them? Do I need to go get all the system files back in order before I upgrade the system? At least now I have my virtual Mac so I can see all the system files the way they should be. I'm so happy to have my virtual Mac!

Ursa and dpaanlka, thank you. That helps a lot!

I tried Basilisk II/JIT today, and it worked! I had 7.5.3 running in XP in less than two hours. What a beautiful sight! That's the first time I've gotten any new system running in less than two weeks!

Now I can practice and experiment on my virtual Mac at home, before I try something on the computers in Patty's Kindergarten class. For example, now I've seen how to install 7.5.3 from the 19-part download.

Depending on what those PowerMacs are, I'd look at dumping a ROM from one of them so you *can* emulate them legally.  SheepShaver, while terribly user-hostile, is at least usable, and can run 7.5.3.

I've been looking at Basilisk, SheepShaver, PearPC, and QEMU. I might start with Basilisk because I found a walkthrough for it that looks easier than any of the others I've found so far.

I only have two hours every Friday to work on the computers in Patty's Kindergarten class. Today I found the MacTCP control on the 7.5.3 computers, and the TCP/IP control on the 7.5.1 computer. The one that already worked on the Internet has a fixed IP address, but the HP is set up for dynamic addressing, so I tried that on two of the Macs. I *think* it worked, because when I started Netscape it looked like they connected. I'm not sure, because they both froze before any Web page actually displayed.

"Sorry, a system error occured. 'Netscape Navigator 3.01' error type 11" The only option offered was a "Restart" button. After that, the TPC/IP control didn't work. I restarted the computer again, and then the TCP/IP control was working again.

I tried to experiment with file sharing, but I ran out of time before I could see any results.

I'm really groping in the dark on these computers. It doesn't help that the students sometimes move and rename system files. For example on one of them the TCP/IP control program had been moved out of the control menu and completely out of the system folder. I stumbled across it while I was looking for something else on the hard drive. Luckily, it hadn't been renamed.

The next time, I'll continue trying to set up file sharing. If I succeed with that, I'll try printer sharing. To replace Netscape on the computer that doesn't have it, is it enough to just copy all the Netscape files from one that does? If not, I'll try installing Internet Explorer 4 or 5.

After that, I'll try installing 7.5.3 on the computer that has 7.5.1.

9 Operating System / 7.5.3 Network and file sharing questions

Hi! My name is Jim. A few years ago my wife salvaged four Power Macs that other teachers were getting rid of, and installed some educational games on them, for her Kindergarten students to use.

Now she wants them to be able to go on the Internet, and to print from them to the printer that's connected to her XP computer. I'm a complete dummy on Mac computers. I've been going in circles trying to learn how to set them up to connect to the school network, and to use a shared printer. I don't even know how to see if they *are* connected to the network. They all have ethernet cables going to jacks in the wall, and I can connect to the Internet with one of them. Two others have Netscape, but I can't connect to the Internet on them. I don't know what happened to Netscape on the other one. I can't even try to connect to the Internet on that one.

Some or all of them have System 7.5.3. One of them might have an earlier version. I'll check again.

Besides setting them up to connect to the Internet, and use a shared printer, I'd like to have a 7.5.3 install disk to repair some parts of the systems that might be broken. The students have done some strange things. I bought a 7.5.3 CD on ebay, but I get an error message when I try to use it. Now I've downloaded a set of 19 files from the Apple Web site that I'm going to try.

Also, I'm looking for a way to make my XP desktop work like 7.5.3, so I can practice using the system at home. I've tried WinMac, but there's a lot missing, and I'm not sure how much good it will be for my purpose. I've looked at emulators, but from what I've read, there's no way to emulate a Mac legally, without owning one.

I'd like to replace Netscape on the computer that's missing it, but I can't find any Netscape download for 7.5.3. In fact, so far the only browser I can find that has a version for 7.5.3, available for download, is Microsoft Internet Explorer.
