worn plate with a saying about hacks

When System 7 Today was inaugurated in 2005, its mission was to provide support to owners of System 7 Macs in order to keep them productive low-end computers.

Back then, a System 7 Mac was still an ideal computer for people on a low budget, an elderly person or as an educational machine for kids. It was good for light web-browsing, working with graphics, typing reports, e-mailing, playing games, instant messaging, and more.

System 7 can still do all these things, but our audience has changed significantly. Most System 7 machines are now either in the hands of collectors or computer enthusiasts. Thus, the initial mission of System 7 Today has altered over the years as well.

For adventurous reasons.

Today, the fascination with System 7 lies in expanding its capabilities and, more often than not, take it way further than ever imagined. Like using your good ol' Macintosh IIci from 1989 for chatting with your Discord pals via an IRC bridge.

Or doing fun stuff like we used to 'back in the days': Listening to web radio on your Performa 6400 while letting your creativity flow creating art work. Paying visits to various Hotline servers or BBSes from your SE/30. Streaming Quicktime video from Cornica on your Power Macintosh 8600 like back in the early 2000s. Or using ClarisWorks to plan your garden layout.

For practical reasons.

Because your pre-G3 PowerPC Macintosh originally shipped with System 7, you'll find that your computer will feel a whole lot faster. And in fact, it probably is. Following our advice, you'll improve your Macintosh and make it do things it has been deemed too old to do.

System 7 uses minimal system resources compared to Mac OS 8 and higher. This means that it is more responsive on your older hardware. Now that all versions of classic Mac OS, including Mac OS 9, are considered outdated, you won't be able to run the latest software on any 68k or PowerPC Macintosh.

System 7 allows you to use great Macintosh software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, and Macromedia Dreamweaver. Yet, it runs them faster than Mac OS 8.6 on a similar machine, using far less memory and system resources.

Also, the System 7 user interface itself uses less screen real estate, so you will have more useable space on lower resolution displays that were common in the System 7 era, and even greater space on high resolution displays powered by the latest video cards.

For nostalgic reasons.

Mac OS 7.6 is a fascinating operating system that was much more powerful than people credit it as being. Remember, the System 7 era spanned two major releases of Microsoft Windows (3.1 and 95), a true testament to its power and longevity. So, if you have an older beige Mac lying around, why not give System 7 a try? You may find it surprisingly fun to use.
