The text-based Gopher network pre-dates the WWW and enjoyed great popularity among university students during the early 90's. Using Gopher feels a lot like browsing the personal and uncommercialized Web of the 90's. Today, Gopher is still alive and new "gopherholes" (think Websites) are created by enthusiasts.
In order to access the Gopher network, you need a client. TurboGopher has been the client of choice for many decades now and will run fast even on your good ol' Mac LC. The recommended version of TurboGopher on System 7 is 2.0.3.
