Musashi
A rather little known e-mail client from Japan. Musashi comes in 68k & PowerPC versions, offers a sleek interface, supports POP3 / SMTP and worked out-of-the-box with our e-mail SSL-tunnel for older Macs when testing.

Features include multi-user support, multiple signatures per user, filtering, customization and localizations. Still, it remains an application with a small footprint and the 68k version runs smoothly on machines like the Macintosh LC III or SE/30.

Netscape
Isn't it an internet browser? That's true, but it also comes with a very capable e-mail client. While visually a bit of an ugly duckling, it turns out to be one of the most compatible clients on System 7.

Mulberry
Mulberry is an advanced e-mail client for PowerPC Macs, released in 2001. Surprisingly, the last version compatible with System 7 (v2.0.8) supports all OS versions back to 7.1. Mulberry handles both POP3 and IMAP e-mail and offers options for customization.

Unfortunately, the interface can be very confusing and does nowhere adhere to Macintosh standards. We have been able to connect and retrieve e-mail via the SSL-tunnel for older Macs during testing.

Eudora
Eudora has a rich history in the Macintosh market, being the "pro e-mailing tool of choice" for many professionals at one point. Unfortunately, not much remains. The last version (???) installs bloatware like the dreaded Appearance Manager and earlier versions can't handle SMTP authentification, meaning you'll need Baton Mail to get them to work.

POPmail II
POPmail II is a small 68k e-mail client last updated in 1995 (v.2.2). It features a friendly black & white 1-Bit interface, much catering to compact Macs like the Plus or SE(/30). Also thanks to its low RAM requirements. POPmail II supports both POP and (despite its name) also IMAP.

though in testing we discovered that ports are hard-coded and can't be set manually.

  • 1MB of RAM (2MB for System 7)

Claris E-Mail
Clairs E-Mailer used to be the de-facto standard e-mail application on the Macintosh during the early years. Lack of product
