Hello, my name is Ryan. I am looking into getting an old Mac, but I am not sure what to get. I saw this on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.ca/Apple-Macintosh-Classic-II-computer-system_W0QQitemZ120149399741QQihZ002QQcategoryZ80075QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting Would that be a good choice? I want one just to fool around with. Now here are some questions: 1)Could I get internet on that Mac? 2) Whats the best system version? I am using 7.5.5 on Basilisk. That is everything, I will appreciate any help. - Ryan |

Hi Ryan! I think that you have done a wise start to classic macs by using Basilisk on pc. The Classic II that you have been looking in ebay looks to be in good condition and probably a good catch, but I would rather get a slightly newer for a first old mac, especially if you are looking to use your old mac for everyday computing, rather than as a hobby only. Macs from a time period of 7300, 7500, 8600 etc are much closer technically to your modern pc, than the Classic II is, making your start easier. The price is lower too. Something like USD 20 vs USD 100. It is possibly to do Internet with the Classic, but it is more difficult than with the 7000 etc series, and you can not do everything. Here is a good site to check the specs of all macs: http://www.apple-history.com/ To learn, download and what not, of Macs from the Classic II era: http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/index.html http://www.jagshouse.com/ From these sites you will learn what/how you can do with a Classic II, so you will know if it is the thing you are looking for. Incase it is the looks of the Classic you are after, check models 5400 and 5500. These are "modern".

Thank you for the nice replay. This feels like a very nice community. Do you have any idea ware I could get one of the models you recommended? I can only seem to find Classics on eBay, also please note that I live in Canada.

I live in Finland and have bought all my macs from Ebay. Most from Germany and some (laptops mostly, because of postage) from the US. Three of them have come in the original packages, and one was NOS from 1997! Try to change your Ebay search a bit, as there have been times, when I have felt like a kid in a candy store. Old macs are plentiful and cheap, so do not pick the first one unless it is a real jewel. In a couple days/weeks you will probably find an even better one and there is a limit, how many one can keep. Good hunting!

My experience is with slightly newer macs, so would appreciate if a member who is/has actually used a Classic II would jump in here to help.

Lol, yea the look of it kinda told that. So the first one I posted was the best? What does it lack online? Css? Or just painfully slow. The Classic can run 7.6.1 well?

From todays internet experience standard, the Classic II lacks everything. Css could be from another planet! You really should not buy one as your first mac. The one for sale really looks great and I am tempted myself, but I am afraid it would only bring grief to you. The step from your modern pc to the Classic II is too big. If you really want it, buy something bit newer at the same time and work with the Classic II at the side.

Rather than looking for a specific model, try to find an upgraded/maxed out with extras in a good condition (these have probably been used a lot). This could prove to save your time and money. Or one that has been used very little and never upgraded, probably from a private home. As it has never been upgraded and probably running a too high OS, the owner thinks it is useless. Before making the decision, spend some time reading S7T, LEM, OWC, xlr8 and other great sites to get a good picture of software/hardware & available upgrades and check the specs from http://www.apple-history.com/ to find the right one for your needs. 5500 has TV with remote control and it is compact with inbuild monitor. 9600 takes enormous amounts of RAM and PCI cards, if you have needs for those (I have). 8600 is ready for video. The 7000 series is much cheaper than 8000/9000s, and Sonnet sells new 400Mhz g3 cards for 7200 for less than USD 30 (to US addresses only?), making it a real good deal. I paid EUR 1 + s&h for a 7200 myself.
