Hi. I've just got this powerbook with the os working, it seems to be pretty much empty otherwise. It has a CD drive but no floppy drive (dont know if its working) and I got a couple of zip drives with it too - 1 x usb & 1 x pin socket, so I have the capability of downloading stuff onto my iMac and transfering it over to the powerbook if they both work. I want it basically to keep the likes of word, excel, powerpoint and adobe pdf documents on for reference and editing on the move, anything else (internet access etc) would be a bonus - it appears to have a 56k modem, theres an icon on the screen and a setup disk in the box it came in. Is there a limit to how much extra ram and hard drive memory I could add to it to increase the storage and speed? I'd also be very grateful for advice or suggestions as to what firmware and software will get the best from the machine, OS 8, 9, G series? or if it is going to be fine with 7.6.1? Also what is the most appropriate Microsoft Office converter to be able to read and edit word excel powerpoint etc on it. & which is the latest version of adobe reader that it will cope with? sorry for the long list of Questions and thanks in advance for any replies. |

Quote from: "clevinger" Hi. You can use compact flash pcmcia adapters for file transfers. Wifi cards are also availible via pc cards. Just make sure it's 16bit. Making sure you have the right drivers for the modem is esential. I use earthlink dial up on mine. You can even hook up to a network, there is surprisingly a lot you can do with a 1400. 64 meg ram is all it can take, I've never even come close to having issues with 64 only. I have a 10gig hdd in one of my 1400's and it's more than enough. You can also upgrade the processor to a G3, a Sonnet 333 is what I have. Quote from: "clevinger" I'd also be very grateful for advice or suggestions as to what firmware and software will get the best from the machine, OS 8, 9, G series? or if it is going to be fine with 7.6.1? I use 8.6 and 7.6.1 using apples system picker to change between the 2 o/s versions, for me it depends os software requirements. 7.6.1 is very good on a 1400. Quote from: "clevinger"
I use appleworks with dataviz converter it seems to work okay. Haven't really used office, not a big fan of microsoft products. Check the main site for an adobe reader that would work. Quote from: "clevinger"
You are welcome, a long list is the easiest way to get info! Niki

I see you've joined and posted the same question to MacRumors. Anyways Mac OS 7.6.1 would be my recommendation on that system for the best speed and compatibility with stuff. To open PC Word and PowerPoint files, you can go ahead and get a copy of Microsoft Office 98 for cheap on eBay or wherever. 64mb is the maximum memory for that computer. I don't know what you mean by G series, and firmware is not something you'll need to worry about on that computer. On a 1400c, you're not going to be any more productive moving up from 7.6.1. This site (Software Guide, Help Center) should provide you with lots of useful information about using Mac OS 7.6.1. I'd say stick with it.

Yep, guilty as charged, I'm new to mac forums and I'd guess there may be people on here not on the other one and vice verca, I'm just trying to gather the most info in the quickest time to get up and running. Sorry if this is the wrong way to do it, no offence meant. I use several forums for the other interests of mine with different users on different forums for the same product or sport. If it's bad form to post on both, which would you recommend I go to first, Here or MacRumours? anyway, thanks for the info to both of you, I'm off tomorrow so can have a play and proper look at it and the internet to see what is out there to download and get it up and running. regards

Quote from: "clevinger" Also what is the most appropriate Microsoft Office converter to be able to read and edit word excel powerpoint etc on it. Download link for icExcel 1.0 (OS 7.1-8.5) and icWord 2.0 (OS 7.1-8.6): http://www.panergy-software.com/buy/download.html Both of these are 30-day full versions so you can try if you like these before buying. MS Office 98 (Mac) is sloooooow, so although I have it, I try to avoid using it personally.

I've just bought 2 Powerbook 1400s, one a 1400c /166 and the other a 1400cs/1400. Both have 48Mb RAM The former came with OS 8.5 and an MAC OS 8 CD.It has Microsoft Office 2001 and Office 98 on it. The latter came with OS 9.1, a Dell TrueMobile PCMCIA wireless card, but no software. Both work fine but I'm having difficulty locating OS 7.6 (where do you buy it?.....couldn't find it on Apple's site?.......why isn't it free yet if it's so hard to locate?) I'm looking to try and consolidate the laptops so they both have the same OS and programs. How do i go about this? I bought a few PCMCIA CF adaptor cards that work fine with a San Disk 2Gb card. I copied one of the Powerbook's 'Macintosh Drive' icon to it (about 1Gb in size). Is it just a case of dragging this onto the other laptop's 'Macintosh Drive' icon to clone one OS onto another? I'm from a PC background so all the Mac file terminology is new to me. Any help much appreciated. Al

Quote from: "sierraredd" Dell true mobile wifi cards don't work with 7.6 they need 8.something, I have 8.6 for this. Yes, I forgot to mention that. You have to have an authentic Lucent WaveLAN, or Proxim Orinoco card to work. They have to be of the silver or gold variety, and they have to be 16-bit cards (not 32 bit "Cardbus") - I believe you can tell the two apart by the gold contact plate on 32bit card, which is absent on 16bit cards, and by the notching, which is different. http://main.system7today.com/articles/tutorials/osxsharedinternet.html Farallon SkyLINE PC cards also work, although I've never actually tried it. These also would have to be 16 bit. The SkyLINE cards requirements are listed as: "Macintosh PowerBooks: 2400, 3400, G3 Series (Future support: PowerBook 190, 1400 & 5300) Available Type II PC card (PCMCIA) slot Mac OS 7.5.5 or higher and OT 1.1.1 " The drivers for both are in the Help Center. http://main.system7today.com/helpcenter.html

A 1400/166/48 is nice and capable, but stay out of os 9 as it is way too heavy for pb1400 ram wise. If you for some reason find in the end that you need it for compatibility reasons, go for os 8.6 instead, and max the ram out to 64mb. 48mb should be fine for 7.6.1. It is more than likely you will want to start from the scratch two or three times, before you are happy of how things works, so feel free to start with the os 8, even if you will switch to 761 in the end. Most of the help and all of the software here run fine with both of them. If you go with 761, there is a nice bonus for you as a new mac user. This site. Here is a ready made map for you to follow, to get a flying start. You do not need to figure out so much by yourself, just follow the instructions and you will have a well behaving and productive computer for everyday use, that will double as a hobby also. Things you will learn in os 7.6.1, will make you fluent in os 8 & 9 too. And give you a solid background for os X, if need arise.

I have two PB 1400's... both are of the "c" variety, one is running the 133mHz module with 32M or RAM and the other is running the cacheless 117MHz module (overclocked to 133MHz) with 16M RAM. I have run every system on them from the stock installer disk all the way up through the (unsupported) system 9.2.2, and a few versions of Linux. I actually bought a 166MHz/64Meg system back when they were relatively new... which cost a pretty penny... but I got my current 1400's at a thrift store. Even with 16M RAM w/ 117MHz CPU, the system is surprisingly usable under 7.6.1... so it would FLY with 64Megs + 166MHz. I have gotten a few of the Wavelan/Agre/Orinoco cards to work very well with the version 6 drivers. The 133MHz model runs happily up to a stripped down version of 8.6, and will "function" usably-well under a very very stripped down version of 9.1 with as little as 32Meg of RAM (it will boot with 16Megs but you have to install the system manually since the installer won't start up with less than 24Megs in the system), and is a crash-fest if I play dirty tricks to get anything above that to boot... that required breaking open installer tomes, resediting the system and other tricks that ended up with a system that was still too bloated to work well, so it was more of a 'do it just to say that I did' deal. I have not tried OSX yet... but we'll see what happens if I get snowed-in for a few days this winter... Anyway, I say that even though you can run later systems... use system 7.6.1. The biggest hurdle is browsing modern websites with ancient browsers, or trying to get iCab to behave, but overall the system will be very snappy even with very little RAM. Netscape Navagator 4.0.8 is my current favorite, but I use WannaBe if I am just scouring test based boards for drivers or whatever. I DO run the apperance library SDK and a few other things just to smooth over the Spartan looks of system 7 though. If it helps, here are the little tricks that I like to use to milk the best speed from the system: RAM doubler (I still have the original floppies) set to only use faster paging not emulate more RAM, speed doubler, a low-ish disk cache setting, CPUcharger and ROAM (ROM-in-RAM... which is nice if you have enough system ram to spare the extra megs to host the ROM functions). A faster Hard drive helps too, but you are really screwed by the ultra slow transfer speed of the system. Those tricks will work up to system 8.6, but get ugly in 9.0 and above. Consequently, I have a 400MHz PC laptop with 196Meg of RAM that I got for free, which is my Linux experiment machine, and even the 16Meg/117MHz PB 1400 with system 7 outruns ANY system that I have installed on it so far, and is FAR more functional in terms of being a viable modern desktop since anything over Windows 98 won't run properly on it because of the lack of proper drivers.
