Hello !

i regently got my hands on two 1440cs/166 w 64Mb and 1.3Gb

Unfortunately the hd's are totally wiped - and now i wonder how to install a system. I even bought an external SCSI CD drive and suitable adapters and am able to boot some system 8 installation CD from the CD drive, but unable to install. The CDs i've tried are 1) G3 beige system 8 installation disk 2) iMac system 8.5.5 installation disk and 3) 7.6.1 installation CD ( which does not boot but gives an error message ).

After booting the system 8.n installation CD i'm able to use the installer, but not able to install as the installer does not see the HD of the 1400cs - WHY ? What to do ? Ideas ?

Thanks !  /mc

What is the error that you get when booting the 7.6.1 CD?  Is it a CD specific to some computer (i.e. a restore cd)?  Or is it a retail Mac OS 7.6.1 CD?

First use a software that can mount/unmount a HD if the HD is not visible on your desktop, then format the HD. I have bought most of my HD`s as 2nd hand and this is something I sometimes need to do to make them alive. Especially so with the totally wiped ones.

I use LaCie's Silverlining for both of those tasks, but your 761 cd probably has FWB to do the same job.

Next check the HD with Norton Utilities (you can boot mac from it), FWB or Apple's own Disk First Aid just to be sure. Now you are ready to install.

I have 4 pb1400s and when installing 7.6, the first message have always been:" Not possible to install to this mac". If this is the error message you got, there is a simple way around it. Do not click the "main" install button on the first "layer" of the cd's folders, but rather those individual ones in folders on the 2nd "layer".

Then the installation should go smoothly. Unless your 761 cd is a machine specific, and do not work in pb1400.

The machine specific install cd's for older OS's I have are silver/black with text clearly stating to which macs it is. The universal 7.6 I have on the other hand, is silver/green/red without any mention of mac models. But it still do not first want to work in 1400/7300/7500, but do in 7200. It do work in all of those, after chosing install from the 2nd layer of folders.

1) the 7.6.1 does not boot but gives an error message of an invalid command and tells me to disable extencions and try again - there is something on this on this forum, but cd is a copy and don't know if it is for some specific model ....

2) i've tried disk first aid and disk repair that are on 8.n.n CDs i have ( G3 beige and iMac installation CDs that do boot ) but they do not see the internal IDE drive of the 1400cs but only the SCSI CD drive and floppy drive if there's a floppy in it

3) i try to get some extra installation CDs tomorrow, sunday, from my friend

The very first thing you really need to do is using  Silverlining or similar to mount the disk.

Open your 761 (you do not need to install it) and you should find a folder called  "CD Extras". Open it. Inside is a folder "Hard Disk ToolKit", it includes among others "FWB Tools" and "FWB Mounter". Copy it to a floppy if you can not use it from the cd. Use it to mount your HD, before trying anything else, like installation or Disk First Aid. The 2nd thing to do is formatting.  (Somewhere in the process you will be asked to if you want to have drivers installed for the HD. Click yes.)

If the "Hard Disk ToolKit" is not included in your copy of 761, ask for something similar from your friend.

You can not install before you have done mounting, formatting and drivers.

Good luck for Sunday, I am sure you will succeed.

Hello !

It seems that the hardware specific system CDs i have won't do the trick;

--- now i got system 9.n CDs for iMac and iBook, and the same symptoms = they do not see the internal IDE drive of this 1400cs because they seem not to support NUBUS

--- what should i do - i don't know that many Mac owners and hunting 7.6.1 at eBay may just be too difficult --- Mac is also rather rare in Finland ....

You are working your problem from the wrong end. Your current installation problem does not have anything to do which OS to use, are your cd's machine specific or not, nubus or what ever you might think of next.

All you have to do is mount your hd using Silverlining, FWB or something similar. This is not a question does your cd's see your hd, but does your mac see it! So make the hd visible!

Follow those simple steps in my earlier replies. Mount the hd, install drivers/format the hd, check the hd, install an OS. Only at this last point you will find out if your install cd work in pb1400.

7.5.3 is still available free from Apple.

I think that Silverlining and/or FWB hard drive software was included with some of the clone machine installers, but I do not think that software was ever part of an installer from Apple. However if you do have a copy it would probably help with the install process.

Installers become more machine specific as time went on and it is quite possible you have installers that are machine specific. Apple does have 7.5.3 available for download which will work as the OS on a 1400. Apple also has a network book disk available, once booted from that you would be able to install an OS over the network.

It is a bit of a chicken and egg situation, but the 1400 is a highly respected and easily upgraded machine. I am sure once you are past the the not trivial aspects of getting it operational you will enjoy using it very much.

Are you sure that:

1.) there is actually a HD in the machine?

and

2.) that the cables are properly attached to the HD?

I thought that my 76 cd is an universal one, as it works universally and it only reads mac on it. But it does have FWB, so obviously it is from a clone.

The colors of the cd are silver/green/red. The texs on it are:
-Version 7.6
-System Install
-Mac OS (with the old two face logo)
-PowerPC
-P/N:860101-00German

Does anyone know which clone it originally came with?

This is for mattic again, after  I sidetracked to my 76 cd.

You can buy disk tools from http://www.speedtools.com/PrdInfo.shtml
incase you can not find Silverlining or FWB and feel trapped. But the price is very high at USD 59.95.

Hi for all interested parties

Here is a link to a page of gamba's to download several free utilities to handle your HD mounting/formatting/partitioning etc problems.

http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/hd.html

Couple of the links are dead now, but most works. If you are experiencing same type of problems as mattic did, you should be able to solve those with these utilities. Stuff there include among others: Silverlining 2.0 lite and Mount Everything 1.1.1

I got an english 7.6 today from Ebay and the cd is white. I think this is an universal install disk and it came with the original install booklet.

(I did not had any real problems with the 7.6 from a clone, but I am making a mac for a friend who can not speak german).

I have found now two 7.6 cd's without really trying, so there is no need to stay with 7.5.5 if you do not want to.

The new white install cd is slightly easier than the earlier from a clone.
