Does Norton AntiVirus 6 work in 7.6.1? http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/num.nsf/docid/2001031616330211?Open&docid=2003061015430311&nsf=num.nsf&view=docid The support page says from 8.0 upward. Have anyone tried it? I think it still is eligible for virus definitions. The NAV 5 is not. |

That would be nice. It would be a nice thing to be able to stop some new viruses (although those can not harm 761) instead of spreading them around.

I am happy to announce that Norton AntiVirus 6.0 runs nicely in 761. I just made the installation into a 761 testbed mac, and will post again after using it for a while. The cd is HFS, which makes the installation easier. Live Update for virus definitions still work, although the definitions one get are from 1st of June 2003. That should still cover nicely every possible virus for the classic OS's. The installer do point out, that OS 8.0 is needed as minimum. It do it couple of times during the process, but just click forward. After the installation finishes, restart as normal. After restart NAV again reminds you of 8.0 and does not start automatically like it should, being a fresh installation. Just open it from your HD and it will open/work like it should, without any OS mocking. Ever.

Okay, it took awhile for me to get back to the issue, but here we go. There are two ways to do this: A. The option I chose makes the NAV6 work fully. Use Resedit to change the OS number(s) from your System Folder. If I will run into some unseen problems later, I will post of it, but running fine so far. B. Do not ResEdit and everything but the autopart where NAV monitors all the time works, but everytime you turn the mac on, NAV reminds you of needing OS 8. I did this test now actually with a mac running 7.6, without the upgrades of S7T or mine. Which both I will add to it today/tomorrow/when time allows.

You can lie to your 761 mac, that it is a 8.0 or 8.1, but do not try to ResEdit it to be 8.5, or you will be so deep in trouble that there ain't nuff Blues to pick you up from down there, no sir.

I'm going to have to take the position that this is completely not worth it. Editing the System file is never a good idea, especially for something as pointless as anti-virus. Disinfectant should satisfy all your antivirus needs, and runs nicely without manually modifying system files. If for some reason you feel you have to run NAV 6 (which you don't) you should install Mac OS 8, or move your important work to X.

I am sure I do not have to tell you of the weak points of Disinfectant, which are stated by the author of it. My modified 761's are stable and running fine. I do not have a need to move to 8. The mainpoint for editing the System file for me was actually to make SoundJam+ run. The earlier versions are not available, but later ones like 2.5.2 are. And there is no other way of encoding mp3s in 761, or is there?

SoundJam MP encodes MP3s exactly in the same manner as SoundJam+. And MP requires neither editing file resources or installing EVIL system extensions.

My answer of how to make a late SJ+ work in 761 was for madmann. He had bought one, but could not make it run. I would be happy to use an early SJ, so please explain how you personally go around the encoding time limit of the SJ Free? Isn't it something like 30 minutes or 30 songs?

You don't use MP Free you use MP. If one intends to buy software for a System 7 computer, it's a good idea to check the system requirements on the box.

Nav can be used on itself to update it's own def's forever. not so sure that this is the place to post this kind of thing though. ;-)

ResEdit in capable hands can do more than a cool rain in summer to reclaim your crop. :-/ if you avoid most icons in 8.1 and above (8 bit masking the issue)ResEdit can do, in many cases, what you need. No sorrow. i'm sure you know that always working on a copy of any file gives you unlimited grace. but please, first, see my other post you may see other post in this thread. _Dave
