When I try to start my performa 6200cd, it gets to the  mac os loading screen then gives me an error message saying a system error occured, saying it was an illegal instruction and says to restart with extensions off. When I restart holding down the shift key it gets to the welcome to macintosh screen and says extensions off, goes to the mac os loading screen and gives me the same error message. Please help!!!!

If I would be in your situation, I would try to start the mac  from an OS or Norton cd. If it would start from the cd, the next step would be to use Disk Doctor or similar  to check/repair the hd. Then try to start the mac from hd again.

I used the startup disk and ran first disk aid, the first time it said there was a problem and then I ran the repair and it said it fixed it. When I restarted the computer it had the same problem. Now first disk aid says there is no problem. Should I just try to reinstall the OS?

I would, IF there isn't anything in hd, that you would regret to loose.

If you have, then your options are to add a 2nd hd or copy all from your current one to somewhere first.

Installing OS 7 is so fast, that it would be my option, rather than trying to figure out what is wrong. It is quite possible everything could be ok the 2nd time.

I completely reinstalled the OS. Everything seems to work fine now, just need to put all the software back in. Two questions though, why would it have done that in the first place? and how come when I start a program like Claris Works or The Learning center you can't see the icons on the desktop behind it? You could see them before I reinstalled the system. Sorry one more I just thought of too... I can't remember how to not have the launcher open everytime you start the computer, how do you turn that off?

The Launcher have an on/off  checkbox: Apple Menu-Control Panels-General Controls.

For your two other questions, I do not have answers. Maybe someone could jump in to give an idea?

I believe both answers are in the general control panel. There's a check box for show desktop in the background. And the launcher as well.

Thanks sierraredd,
a bit embarrassing  about the show desktop option. I have always had it on, so was quite blind for its  checkbox.  It truly stands there,  just a centimeter from the Launchers box. Oh my.

You're welcome! As for the reason for the other question. I don't know. I've had the same problem. Like most older operating systems, every once in a while you just need to reinstall. I also noticed that it seems to happen when the system sits unused for a long time. Glad it's working.
