Well, what you're gonna want to do is find a Mac OS 7.6.1 CD somewhere, like eBay or Craigs List or what not. You'll boot from the CD and reformat your hard drive, then install Mac OS 7. There isn't really any other way to do it. But using Mac OS install CDs is super simple way better than Linux or Windows. The CDs pretty much boot a stripped down version of the Mac OS, and you use graphical utilities to do the formatting and installing. You can even access your hard drive and move documents to a floppy or external hard drive while booted in the Install CD, if you want to (and your hard drive is HFS formatted, not HFS+).

Thanks for your fast reply, dpaanlka! So far, looking for such a 7.6.1 CD seems to be a fairly time-consuming or expensive proposition compared to otehr options :/ Wondering if it would be best to quickly go with a Linux installation for Macintosh PPCs for now (e.g., Debian GNU/Linux), well before undertaking the OS 7.6.1 downgrade. Isn't there a way to get a pre- OS 7.6.1 CD via a free download and patch up to 7.6.1 ?? Otherwise, the current cost-to-benefit ratio of downgrading a slow-but-working OS 9 system on a PowerPC to OS 7.6.1 may not make this worth it for the time-being

The highest version of Mac OS you can get for free is System 7.5.5. It cannot be patched up to 7.6.1, which is a major release higher. 7.5.3 Full Install Disks: http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/Older_System/System_7.5_Version_7.5.3/ 7.5.5 Update: http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/System_7.5.5_Update/

while it still runs os 9 you can download 7.5.3 and 7.5.5 then create a boot cd. then use it to install 7.5.3. while in system 9 do not forget to make a cd to upgrade to 7.5.5. also make sure your cd is in standard mac cd mode and not mac extended. this will allow you to run 7.5 until you locate a 7.6 cd this is what i had to do. enjoy
