Hi There! I just "inherited" my friend's old Mac. It is a 8100 with a sonnet G3 accelerator card (bringing the machine up to almost 500Mhz) and OS 9.1 installed. Should I consider "downgrading" to system 7.6.1 or should I stay with OS 9.1. The system has 256MB of RAM and a 4Gig hard-drive. Thanx! wynken |

This web site is powered by an 8100 with a Sonnet G3 and Mac OS 7.6.1. It's entirely up to you. Since that is an extremely fast system, speed wouldn't be a reason to downgrade. However, geeky fun might be. And technically, it would be faster. Using System 7 with any G3 upgrade feels like using some sort super-computer.

I might just do that (if I can get my hands on 7.6.1...eBay, here I come!) Thanx for the info. I'll see what I can do with 9.1 and I might "upgrade" to 7.6.1. wynken

The limitations in 7.6.1 are about the same in 9.X now which is a web browser that works well. Most every thing that can be done in bloated os9 can be done faster in 7.6.1. The best part is classic os software is cheap to get. I have also noticed that a lot of software is compatible back to 7.6. I have an osX b&W acting as a server to my 7100 os7 machine with few issues including print sharing. I overclocked a g3 and loaded 9.2 to see what i am missing running os7. What I have found is that I was missing more stuff that would not run under os 9 than the other way around. I bought word 5 and excel 4 in 1993 and have little seen few real day to day improvements in the past 14 years. It still does everything I need include publish and subscribe. enjoy the site I am michael

Hi Michael! Thanx for your input. I've set-up the station on a temp basis besides my PC and tried it out yesterday. Browsing the web was ok - not great, but ok. I'm just trying to figure out the best use for this machine. If you, or anyone, have interesting suggestions, I'm interested. Thanx! wynken

Have you turned CSS off? It makes a world of difference in all the browsers: http://main.system7today.com/browsercentralcss.html

WaMCom is pretty good. It opens every page I go to just fine, which iCab still can't do even though being actively developed. I can do some web browsing in System 7, but I need a minimum of 8.6 and WaMCom to do everything. Running 7.6 on a G3 sounds awesome, but I'd definitely have OS 8 or 9 on there too since you've got something that will run it well.

I have 7.6.1 running on a G4. You're right, it is awesome. Most people who try System 7 on a G3 or G4 class machine make comments like "it feels like a supercomputer" and "wow, this is so fast." For most people, I imagine it comes pretty close to what they would imagine using some sort of *supercomputer* would feel like. That being said, WamCom is alright for Mac OS 8 or 9, but dog slow, even on G3s. There was another build of Mozilla 1.3 that was a little bit faster and more stable in my opinion. I don't remember where it is or what it was called.

I am running SeaMonkey in 7.6.1 with VPC3 and Windows 98se. SeaMonkey looks and feels like an upgraded WaMCom. Totally modern browser and it includes a mailclient too. My WaMCom experiencies are really positive too. Browsing the web with it is faster with my 450Mhz G3, than with a friends modern basic pc, running XP and a current Microsoft browser.
