Stock, it is probably a 3400/240. However a G3 upgrade can be put in a 1400, which would probably take it to the top of the heap. The 2400 can also take a G3 upgrade as well. But the 2400 and the G3 upgrade for it are much less common than the 1400.

A 2400 with a G3 upgrade.  Fast processor and fast video.

How would a Kanga stack up in this contest?

The Kanga is a G3 based PowerBook and is much faster than the earlier Powerbooks. The Kanga however does not run any variant of System 7. This thread from Mac Rumors provides some reference material.

I probably have a brain tumor. But ISTR that, although not officially supported, a Kanga will boot the same version of 7.6 that shipped with the 3400c. Does anyone know by direct experiment that this is not the case? Otherwise, I'll be tempted to give it a shot.

I finally got around to reading the thread referenced. Thanks, guys -- you saved me the trouble of finding out what y'all already knew.

Time to get another CAT scan...

I haven't personally, and that would be very interesting to find out, although I pretty much guarantee it won't work.

were there no G3 or CPU upgrades for the 3400? because the 2400 and 3400 use the same motherboard AFAIK, so if it works in one, it should work in both.

I also think the kanga has a fixed CPU.

funny story: I actually passed up a 3400c on my local CL for $40, and a kanga on ebay for $30 within one week. I still feel stupid.

The 3400c and 2400c do not "share" an identical motherboard, they simply share similar architectures.

Is the graphics in a 2400 better than the graphics in a 3400?

I believe they're the same, if not very very close.  So on a 2400c, you can add a G3 processor to that, hence the fasterness.

I had a kanga, and i can tell you one thing about it. It is just a 3400c with a G3 CPU instead of a 603ev, as well as a C&T 2MB video chip on board.

If that were true you would be able to run System 7 on it.
