Has anybody had any luck running a version of Open Transport newer than 1.1.2 in System 7.6.1? I have heard that Apple made some big networking improvements in Mac OS 8.5. I'm inclined to believe that these improvements were achieved through a more efficient implementation of Open Transport. Does anyone know if Open Transport from Mac OS 8.5 can be used with System 7.6.1? |

Does anyone know if Open Transport from Mac OS 8.5 can be used with System 7.6.1? OpenTransport 1.2 shipped with OS 8 and from what I have read it is compatible with 7.6.1, however I do not know of a source for that version beyond the OS 8 install disks. OpenTransport 1.3 shipped with OS 8.1 and Apple states it was not tested with OS versions prior to OS 8. You are correct that Apple made very substantial improvements to networking as time went on. The Mac OSes up through 8.1 share a very similar architecture, but OS 8.5 moved to the Mac OS having a kernel at its lowest level. Very few changes were made to the APIs and OS 8.5, 8.6 and 9.x are very compatible with older software. However changes at the lowest level did cause many problems with drivers and the likes that interact with the lowest levels of the OS. It would be interesting to see if OpenTransport 1.2 or 1.3 work with 7.6.1 and if they offer improvements. I do doubt that OpenTransport from 8.5, 8.6 or 9.x would work with 7.6.1 bill
