Since this site is called System 7 Today, and in in light of the fact that the webmaster has a particular affection for System 7.6.1, I suppose this is the best place to have this issue addressed. The issue that plagues me is transfer speeds in web browsers. I am currently using Internet Explorer 5.0.2 in System 7.6.1 on a PowerMac 7200/90, and it takes f..o..r..e..v..e..r.. to download files. Is there anyway that I can add some speed to my leeching? As an example, I am downloading Corel WordPerfect 3.5e while I type this, and I'm getting transfer speeds of about 2,300 bytes/second. At that rate, this 24.2MB file is estimated to take about two hours to download. That is outrageous. Which browsers do you find give the best performance under System 7.6.1? |

You do not say but I would guess you are using modem for your connection. The 2.3KBs would seem to indicate a 28.8/33.6kbps Modem. If that is the case, it is important to look for and use a matching modem script/profile. If there is none for your modem in the default install, you might do a search for one. There was a modem script generator in the older Apple downloads that allowed one to create their own custom script. That would be of benefit if there are variations between what your ISP expects and what your modem is providing. Modems generatlly negotiate connections and have fall back options, which will make things work, but are not necessarily optimum. If you know what your Modem can do and what your ISP can do, the fastest connection can be established by locking your modem into settings that match the expectations of your ISP. I am sure I will take heat for this, but I think prior to OS X, Mac OS file transfers were always slower than the competitors. Your best, fastest and most reliable transfers can be done using an ftp client if the server supports this. My favorite browser for file transfer use has always been Cyberdog and my second choice has been Opera. bill

Actually, I'm on a 10Mb brodband cable connection. I typically get transfer speeds much greater than a couple of Kb/s. Generally, I would expect to receive a 24MB file in a minute or two. So it comes as quite a shock when I find myself needing to wait two hours for a 24MB file. I'm using the internal Ethernet port on this 7200/90, and I have Open Transport 1.1.2 installed. By way of comparison, I have a Quadra 700 running Debian Woody, that typically gets transfer speeds between 140Kb/s and 200Kb/s. So I'm really at a loss to understand why this PowerMac 7200/90 is achieving such abysmal throughput. Before returning to Mac OS on this machine, I was using it as a router with Debian Sarge. LAN traffic to and from the Debian 7200 was typically in the 900Kb/s range. How can I get Mac OS 7.6.1 chiming along at even half those speeds?

Quote from: "Minimalist" Actually, I'm on a 10Mb brodband cable connection. Well then definitely something is not working right. I use 7.6.1 with an 8600 and a DSL connection and do much better than that. Your estimate of 24MB in a couple minutes seems in line with what would be expected. While newer versions of OpenTransport are better than what is found in 7.6.1. OpenTransport 1.1.2 is very usable and you should see respectable file transfer rates. I would check all your settings. If you find nothing in the settings I would trash the preferences and set everything back up again from scratch. If that is of no help, I would do a reinstall of OT and the update for it. If this is going through a server or router, it might be worthwhile to have a look at the logs to see if anything strange is happening. bill

I also have a 7200/90, and for whatever reason, file transfers take forever under any release of Internet Explorer, but not with any other browser. This happens under System 7.x, 8.x, and 9.x. On a 768K DSL connection, my download speeds under IE usually run about 5-20Kb/sec, while Netscape can fetch files at 78-82Kb/sec. My solution is simply to use Netscape for downloading things.

check your cable. I make ethernet cables and some of the older cables I made were actually bad, i was getting like 8000 bits a second. Switched the cables to a new one I made, and i get around 135k

I'm still kinda new to this whole business of making old Macs do things they aren't supposed to, but logically, it seems that if more than one person is having this problem with the same browser, then it must be a browser related issue and your modem and OS settings probably won't change anything. IE probably needs tweaking more than anything else. That's where I would look first for problems. If you are able to download fine using other browsers, then it can't be the OS or the modem that is at fault.
