Anyone know of a way to get an ATA controller card (PCI) working on a 9600 under 7.6.1? I have a Sonnet TempoTrio card that isn't being used, and even though the USB and FW wouldn't work it would be great to toss that 2GB SCSI drive in favor of an 80GB ATA/133 HD. Thanks for any ideas you might have. |

Your 9600 is supported hardware for the TempoTrio card, but according to Sonnet the drivers need to be OS9 or later. I see no reason why you could not install it and see if it works. Sometimes system requirements can be worked around by installing on a supported system and OS and then moving the files that were installed to the machine you wish to try them on. I have an old USB card in my 8600 which does not work under 7.6.1, however it also does not cause any problems. bill

Thanks, Bill, I was fooling around with it tonight and was able to get it working under 7.5.3 on an 8600/200 but not under 7.6.1 on the 9600. Strange. On the 9600, I have OS 9 installed on one of the SCSI drives, and installed 7.6.1 on the ATA drive through the TempoTrio. After installation, I selected that drive as the startup disk, and booted into it once successfully. On the second restart, I got the question mark and it wasn't able to see the drive anymore. Under 7.5.3 on the 8600, however, I did the same deed and it continued to restart time after time without a problem on the ATA disk.

I have found that almost all of sonnet's plain-jane ata cards work fine in 7.6.1 as they appear to the os as a scsi bus for compatibility. As a test, I loaded 7.6.1 on my Mach5 9600 last night and was able to use the 2-port sonnet sata card flawlessly with some WD 250gb drives i had laying around... Can't beat that kind of storage capacity and support in 7.6.1. (only downside was that minimum filesize on a single-partition drive was 3.6mb... great for media fles, just not little text files ![]() the tempo ata 66 and 133 cards work fine as well from my testing, contrary to sonnet's minimum specs pages.

Wow that is excessively exciting, as I've always in the back of my mind had a feeling the SATA cards would work. Sonnet lists the minimum OS as Mac OS 8.0, and there are no drivers. There is little to nothing different between 7.6.1 and 8.0 in terms of disk drivers so I figured it would work, just wasn't sure enough of myself to actually bite the bullet and buy one. But now I will!
