PowerFox and PowerFox Classic are secure, modern, and open-source web browsers tailored specifically for your PowerPC or Intel Mac running anything from Mac OS X 10.3 Panther to macOS 10.14 Mojave.

PowerFox is a port of Firefox 153 ESR for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion to macOS 10.14 Mojave, while PowerFox Classic is a UXP-derived browser compatible with Mac OS X 10.3 Panther, 10.4 Tiger, 10.5, Leopard, and 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Interesting stuff! Out of curiosity, was this supported by llms?

For better or worse, in the world we currently live in, I think if you see "new browser" you can pretty much assume AI was used to some extent.

The person behind this is a regular at Leopard Ports, so I've watched the sausage being made.  AI was used, the extent to which is hard to tell, but the effort is good.

There is another "new browser" for ppc that is in the works, thanks to AI, that I expect will be announced soon...or maybe not...

There seem to be multiple vibe-coded (or partially vibed) efforts for "modern" browsers on older machines, some are farther along than others, some people "know what they are doing", and some clearly do not.

Some seem to get to a point and are being abandoned after many many tokens have been spent, when poor performance is seen, or the creators find they have dug themselves into an "AI hole" that they don't understand or know how to get out of.

yeah, I guess the question I wanted to ask was “in which way was an LLM involved”, but trying not to be presumptuous (and instead maybe coming off passive aggressive? lol)

I ask for that gap that you say: I’ve tried a few classic projects recently that make big claims and ultimately don’t work, and how llms were used makes a huge difference in what I’ll probably encounter if I run it.

I would say you could look up the author, or look at their github for exact info on the project, and probably get a good idea.

The author is active on discord, presenting progress, asking and answering questions.  Personally, I count them, as far as I can tell, among those that "know what they are doing".

I do not definitively know how much AI they used, but the project does seem "good", or at least as close to "the real deal" as we are likely to get these days.  I've tested earlier versions with success.  The author seems genuine and honest, and not under any illusions.

On the same discord, there is active progress/discussion of another different browser project.

This looks promising and I'm sure the many people on PPC and Intel OSX will surely appreciate the great work that has gone into it. No easy feat, that's for sure.

Personally I'm so rarely on OSX these days that I don't know when I may get to test drive it... but I'll keep it in mind. Go Go Go, PowerFox dev! :)

I downloaded the versions. i have a 2010 intel mac that I do not want to up the operating system on and I have both a 2004 PowerBook and iBook. i put it into the intel mac and it seems to work fine. All three of these maxhines hd become essentially bricks for browsing and I hope they will now will be useful.

I'd really like to see someone push that back to classic. I still have PB 1400's,with wireless cards.

@Lichen Software
Just installed PowerFox (also running FireFox 115.0.3 ESR) on my Intel 2010 Core 2 Duo. It just works perfect. Next install is my Leopard PPC 1.5Ghz machine (also running AquaFox). I'll get back to ya'll. :) (posting from PowerFox)

A promising read, this PowerFox.

I wonder: we know that Cameron Kaiser (ClassicHasClass on this very forum) developed and maintained TenFourFox for God knows how long and eventually threw the towel into the ring. I remember one of the factors being the expanding difference in code base between the version of Firefox he base(s/d) TenFourFox on and the current version of Firefox ESR and backporting a large part of the bells and whistles.

I also remember him writing about the bug reports and pull requests he recieved (and these were pre-AI and pre-vibecoding days, imagine what that would be like today).

What does this developer do differently (or perhaps not do) to make this work? Could this be purely down to AI-assisted coding (interpret this as broad or narrow as you like)?
