I'm using 2.9.1. What I've done so far is made a crude walking animation with the playable character. I explored the GameMaker IDE, and was happy to find a very basic explanation of what you can do.

I've never tried to make a game on a Mac before, so I feel like a fish out of water. I found a pdf that shows how to make basic games with it, so my goal is to make a game that isn't boring 😅

I'm decent with GIMP/Photoshop, but only for editing and manipulating graphics, but I am definitely NOT talented at making sprites from scratch, but I found a site with wiby.org that has sprites from vintage games to download. I'll use those until I can somehow get legal sprites to use.

I spent a couple days looking for good royalty-free graphics, but very few are acceptable for my game.

The type of game I'm making:
This is a top-down action game like Metal Gear. In fact, I'm using the graphics from that game (hence why I need legal ones). I need sprites for the playable character and enemies. Up, down, left, right, as well as for unarmed and armed. The majority of graphics I found were merely for sidescrolling games, which won't work, since they're missing the up and down angles.

Has anyone here made a game? What did you make it with?

There's a LOT of art out there, and some is even specifically free for re-use...it will usually have text to that effect in the bitmap itself or filename.

Of course the quality varies a lot...and some dishonest people will just rip art from real games and claim they have created it...

Google "sprite sheet" and you'll see loads and loads.  Hope you find something awesome you can use!

Hi Lauland! :) I was going to mention that Lauland’s definitely worked on not only Classic Mac games, but also working to update a Classic Mac game console and arcade system emulator, IIRC? I’m glad he spotted your post! :D

I found the official page of the author of GameMaker for classic Mac OS. I sent him an email requesting more documentation on it. So far, I haven't received a failure message, so hopefully that means his email address from back then still exists.
