You should try upgrading to at least 7.1.  7.1 refined the system quite a bit both stability and performance wise.

If you're going to stay with 7.0.x, you can find some important updates for that system here:  http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/Older_System/System_7.0.x/

Both 7.0.x and 7.1.x system families are very similar.  The larger System 7 versions that tended to slow down 68030s and slower started at 7.5.  By the time 7.6 came out, Power Mac G3s were less than a year away.

Do you include System 7.5 (with Finder 7.1.4) in that?

7.5 did have Apple Guide, but was a 68k-only build that came on seven 1.4M disks, the same number as 7.1.

7.5.3, as downloadable from Apple's web site, is a Fat binary that comes on nineteen disks, and includes all sorts of useful things, like an early version of OpenTransport.

7.5.5 may be just a bugfix of 7.5.3; the difference between these and 7.5 is a lot greater.

I have a "System 7.5 Bible" book that came out in coincidence with the release of System 7.5 and it appears to have just about everything 7.5.3 and 7.5.5 does.  I'm not sure what Finder versions we're talking about.  But from what I read in the book, and my experience with 7.5.3 and 7.5.5, they're much closer to each other than to 7.0.x or 7.1.x.

Thought I'd re-post here since my original reply was split off to a new topic.

My main System 7 Mac is a Quadra 840AV (96 MB RAM) running 7.6.1. I also have a 6500/250 that now runs 7.6.1 as well, and some '030 pizza boxes that I keep on 7.1 Update 3. A IIsi and a IIci that are set up, then an LC III and three more IIcis that are stacked in a closet for the time being.

My 7.6.1-machine is a Performa 5260 (PPC 603e/100MHz/1,2GB HD/64MB RAM).

I also got a PM8500/180 tucked away (breaks my heart), cause I need it's 17"AppleVision with my G4...but I intend to run 7.6.1 on the 8500 when a new Apple-display enters my world...

I bought a 22" iiyama VisionMaster Pro 510-monitor with my G4 back in 2000 cause it had great reviews. And the longest estimated lifespan I could find - 18 years(!). That (of course) was a lie. I managed to squeeze 6 years out of it before it literally went up in smoke...one could smell the burnt powersupply for a week...
My old AppleVision is manufactured in 1995 and still going strong...I'll stay with Apple from now on. Case closed.

(My G4 is runnin' OS9.2.2 and OSX10.4.10, and my MBP is for obvious reasons only capable of da "Tiger" with intel fur)

Oh, I forgot, I'm gonna get the original iMac in a week or two. Maybe I'll run OS8.6 on that one so I get the whole spectra  -OS7 through X!

Keep on Macin' Folks!

I've got a Mac IIfx, 20MB , 500MB HD, an external SCSI 64MB disk, and external SCSI CD ROM.  Currently running 7.5.5 but looking for 7.6.

It's actually an original Mac II with a IIfx motherboard I installed, with the original II video card and 13 inch RGB display.  It's currently networked via ethernet to a Linksys router and a G3 iMac, and then on to an Intel iMac.

I have 4 classic macs, but I'm planning on just keeping 2 going.

Mac IIci with cache card.
20MB / 1GB IBM scsi
Asante MacCon
System 7.5.5

Mac SE/30
16MB / 80MB Apple drive
Farallon SE30 PDS ethernet
System 7.5.5

Mac Classic II
10MB / 60MB Apple drive
System 7.5.5

PowerMac 6500/250
128MB / 4GB (or 6GB, I forget)
ZIP & CD
Realtek 8139D ethernet
System 8.0 (system file) 7.5.5 bits.

The Classic II (and the PowerMac briefly) is connected via a localtalk / ethertalk bridge that was designed for printers mainly. (a Farallon I think)  It provides appletalk and MacIP bridging.  My Cisco router provides the MacIP server as I couldn't get the old open source one working.

I have 7.5.5 on my PowerBook 540c. I'd run 7.6 except that I don't have it!

I also have an old PowerMac 9500/200 in my closet I've been meaning to get up and running again, gonna toss 7 on there and see it scream.

Out of my classic Macs that are running and see regular use:

Quadra 840av with 24MB RAM and 700MB hard drive with System 7.5.3 Revision 2.

Power Mac 7100/80av with 104MB RAM and 700MB hard drive with System 7.5.5.

Power Mac G3/233 desktop with 266 MHz CPU overclocked to 333 MHz, 256MB RAM and 20GB HD running OS 9.1.

Mac SE 2/20 running System 6.0.8.

I also have a PowerBook G4 with Basilisk II (7.5.5) and SheepShaver (9.0) as well as Tiger 10.4.10. There is also an 8600/200 with a 400 MHz G3 card with no drives or memory that I plan to get running again soon.

Powerbook 180 is on 7.5.3
5200CD on 7.5 something
PowerMac 7100 on 7.6 (was 7.5.3)
8100 (in storage) on 8.6 I think
Performa 6400 VE on 7.6 or 8.1
iMac 15' flatscreen dual boots 9.1 and 10.3.9
iBook 500 10.3.9

And that's not too many Macs. I need another one just to keep track of these ones.

Oh yeah, Windows Server 2000 on Pentium II running Appleshare. That's almost a Mac. Not to mention an XP box, need we mention that thing? But that's off topic.

I haven't really tinkered much with my 5200 outside of pulling the logic board to see what I'm going to have to upgrade.  (...and upgrading from 7.5.5 to 7.6.1)  Seems to work fine, but then again, although it has an Ethernet card, I've not yet tried to get it online.

I'm sort of going "backwards" here - I have a Newton MessagePad 2100 and 2000U I was trying to synch with both of my OS X machines (both Tiger 10.4.11 - no need for Leopard)  albeit unsuccessfully. I figure that maybe it'll synch more easily with a computer of the same vintage.  Next step is a G3 WallStreet and OS 9.2.2.  :)
