My first Mac was a Performa 450 running System 7. since there was no internet and all my friends had pc all i could do was resedit and i thought i am a leet hacker. 🤣 Went PC when Half life dropped Went Snow Leopard MacPro5,1 because my pcs kept bsod. Sold it 10 years later. Went PC again. Now im both and everything in between. Also active on macos9lives I‘d love to build retro pro tools rigs. I might have the biggest collection of vintage digidesign hardware in europe 6ish nubus expansion chassis and almost every mac |

Nice to meet you! I used Apples in the late '80s and early '90s in school. Then the rest of the decade I used the Macs the jr/sr high school had. I miss those times fondly, except for a handful of other students.. They had IIGSs in the study center until probably '97. All I could run on those was AppleWorks. All the students complained about the Macs, saying they were slow and just insulting them, since the vast majority of them were PC users. I didn't have a computer of my own back then, and so I knew very little about computers. I just relied on what I heard from other students, so I was anti-Mac until the early 2000s when I got back in touch with a childhood friend who showed me the light about Macs and Apple, and I've been an enthusiastic Mac/Apple fan ever since. The first Mac I got was a Power Macintosh 7200/90, which was one of the ones I used in school. A customer came in and didn't want it, so I took it. It worked up until about 2023 or 2024. Now I'm running a Power Macintosh 7200/75 with a Sonnet Crescendo 400 MHz G3, and a Sonnet Tempo Trio ATA/USB/Firewire card. But only the ATA slots work, at least with this computer.\ I had an account on Mac OS 9 Lives, but eventually something happened to it, and I couldn't log in anymore, so I had to make a new one, but I rarely go there, since I prefer more vintage Macs.

Howdy and welcome to our little corner, I think you'll find we're quite friendly folk! I'm a musician, but strictly analog (anything with strings), and haven't done MIDI since my Amiga days when "Deluxe Music" was considered cutting edge. I've been watching all the talk over at macos9lives and really wanting to get back into it. If anything just to improve my minimal keyboard playing skills. Sounds like you have QUITE the setup! I knew nubus expansion chassis(s) existed, but have never seen one with my own eyes. What are you using them for? Ha...back in ancient times, even knowing what ResEdit was, and not being afraid to use it, did actually make you somewhat of a hacker... ---- Aside to @ShinobiKenobi...we'll get those usb and firewire ports on your card working, you need driver software...but only AFTER we've got your system otherwise stable!

Oh boy! Firewire? Idk if FW has any System 7 system extensions? (or for 8.0-1, for that matter!) My Beige G3, I'm trying to recall, but I think it's 8.1 System folder doesn't recognize those ports until I boot into OS 9 (and IIRC, 8.6's fine) so that may be a significant consideration then?? If there's drivers for those ports for my Beige DT G3 on 8.1, then I want 'em! lolBut hey! Welcome SmilesDavis! as you can tell, we just nerd out on all things Classic Macs, and Mac OS 7 is the grandpappy of Mac's coolest OS! although some would argue System 6 was fast and simply perfect for compact Macs and I might agree for those little Macs (which I also used in school) lol! and whoa! that's some serious hardware you're boasting, congrats on that!

Welcome to our friendly little community, smilesdavis! @cballero - System 7 never "officially" got firewire extensions, but Dan Palka did some testing with "backporting" those from 8.6 and had some success. See here I know that our Knezzen also has made some progress but I'll leave it to him to write more about that :-)

Since I can't select text in the document for whatever reason, I had to open up a graphics app and save as a valid internet image type. Here's a screenshot of it that says it'll work on 7.6 and higher. http://revontulet.org/2025/01/25/e4ae600d9a844d448279f15c0764fa6e.jpg

Interesting! I wasn't aware 1.0 actually *was* released with 7.6.1 compatibility. Take back my comment about it :-) somehow I had remembered it came only with 8.1. I wonder what 1.0 is capable of? Dan was experimenting with 2.0 as being the last 7.6.1 compatible version. I doubt he would have done it if 1.0 was doing the same in his tests. But who knows, I don't remember him comparing the two. Anyone got any info on the differences between the two?

(Apologies @smilesdavis, we seem to have digressed from welcoming you to discussing USB and FW...) Dang! I'd always assumed the same with FW, @Bolkonskij! I have a "Orange Micro" combo USB-FW card, and a generic FW only card, that I'll have to give this a try with in my 7600, will let you all know how it works. USB is related, but, of course, different both from hardware, and the software you'll need to enable it. I know it should be possible with 8.1, since the very first iMac shipped running that. (So even if it weren't "officially" supported, a hack might be possible). I've always only used USB with my 7600 while it was booted in 9.1, where it works very well. Us Mac users are lucky in that the chips used for USB (and I'm assuming FW also) were standardized "OHCI"/"UHCI"/"EHCI" so we can use generic cards, and not need ones designed for Macs...very much unlike the case for IDE. So if you have the right drivers/enablers they should "just work". The same USB card I use in my 7600 works in my G4 to give it USB 2.0 (the USB on its motherboard is only 1.0/1.1). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Host_controller_interface_(USB,_Firewire) (modern browser)

Oh wow! @bolkonskij: that tutorial section and Dan’s forum thread update his FireWire hackery exploits is amazing! we now need to get our hands on more of those older FW cards! ![]() @everyone: isn’t that the beauty of our forums though? We start conversations nested within others, then we need to use the forum search option to find where we had our convos, lol!

Most of my testing ran to a halt when I tried using the Mac OS 8 ROM file on 7.6.1. You get USB and FireWire right out of the box, so I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble getting it up and running on "pure" 7.6.x. It might be a fun thing to do though

@knez: very interesting! I may have to play with OS 8.1 on my DT G3 and try out those ports again

I forgot about trying firewire on 7.6. I'll try to get to it tonight or tomorrow.
