https://multiboot-windows.dscloud.me/All_Pages_for_DOS_GUIs/DG14_MCSHELL.html I haven't tried it yet, but when I saw it I, of course, thought of you guys. The page includes a prebuild virtual machine and an archive of the installer. This one also is a bit mac-like: https://multiboot-windows.dscloud.me/All_Pages_for_DOS_GUIs/DG07_RUSH.html This is his page where he reviews a bunch of other DOS guis: https://multiboot-windows.dscloud.me/All_Pages_for_DOS_GUIs/DG00_My_Pick_Of_DOS_GUIs_Worth_Trying.html |

So would this be what they refer to as "putting lipstick on a pig."

Indeed! But this sounds like fun and it's the right way around (an upgrade!) other than Kaleidoscope themes turning System 7 into Windows 95 or something (a downgrade) :-) I need to give this a try in Virtual PC.

I tried both mcshell and rush and...very weird experience, but fun. Of the two mcshell is WAY more functional and feels a LOT like System 7...but there are so many little quibbles. Like, if they were going to slavishly copy System 7, why didn't they go ALL the way? Like, to get out there's "Quit" under the "File" menu...why not put it under "Special" as "Shutdown" as you'd expect? And I can't find an option to arrange icons, so changing desktop resolution leaves them in the wrong places...and they stole the Chicago font, but not Geneva?!? And what's with the random icons stolen from Windows 95, when they could've used the Mac ones everywhere? One hint, the Control Panel is very very weird. If you click on anything (like "General") you need to "exit" or close it before you can open another. Truly a bizarre user interface choice... A whole lot of tiny little things like that. If they went to all the trouble and got so far, why not go all the way? If they were afraid Apple would sue them, they already are really pushing it. ...but...if you really want a Finder for MS-DOS, this is quite nice. Rush is a bit of a mess. You can't seem to have more than one (or two?) window of any kind open, and need to manually close them before it'll let you open another. You can give it a try, but mcshell is FAR FAR smoother. (I only tried them in DOSBOX on my MacBook Pro, so I don't know if they can launch 32-bit programs. For what it's worth, they will probably run in Windows 95/NT/XP/7/8/etcetcetc.)

@lauland Thanks for taking these for a spin! RUSH looks kind of nifty but doesn't seem too usable. The only thing in it that piqued my interest was the CD Player. I'd love to extract the code from it to use as a stand alone DOS player. I use my DOS 6.22 / Win 3.11 WFW machine nearly every day and I have never found a suitable DOS graphical CD Player (or a graphical clock). Not too MAC like but I've been using a DOS shell called Tempest for 25 years! Developed by Abacus (Data Becker). They were in Grand Rapids, MI back in the 90's. When I lived there, I would go to these computer shows at the Holiday Inn and they would give away free stuff all the time. I think I'll take McShell and RUSH for test drive this evening. 😎 https://revontulet.org/2024/09/24/38cf90424baf44508a25b1eeff21a275.jpg

@Johnny7 since you're practically a dos "daily driver" you should check out the other gui's that guy reviewed. I believe a few of the others have might have cd players in them...and I only mentioned the two that look like System 7. I dearly love all those Abacus/DataBecker books! Back in my amiga/commodore days they were the bomb! I've had a lot of fun downloading them from archive.org...especially the ones I couldn't find or afford back in the day! It looks like there were several in German that never got English translations too. Been having fun with those too, even though my German is practically non-existent, since they're highly-technical I can understand enough to find a lot of gems in there. The Abacus books have got me wanting to unpack my C-128 and set it up and do some coding...esp with the little used z80...but it's hard to justify the desk space...and the frustration with the speed of the ancient hardware...and only having a single "command line window"...and not being able to copy and paste...or just transfer stuff (easily) with a DOS FAT32 disk...etc etc etc. Even contemplating it all has REALLY made me appreciate the Mac all the more...
