Just wanted to point out that user "HolidayPack" uploaded an early System 7 compatible version of Stella, the Atari 2600 emulator, to the Mac Garden. I had been looking after a 2600 emulator for System 7 for some time and I vaguely remember that there had been one other than Stella, but can't seem to remember it. Anyway, one surfaced now! So while I haven't been able to try v.0.7 out, since it's PowerPC only, unfortunately. So it'll have to wait until I get my 7500 back. But looking forward to try our some old classics like Pitfall, Bezerk, H.E.R.O & else! Maybe somebody else feels as excited and would like to give this a try and report back? |

Some emulation options were done using another emulator, such as a Mac 68k DOS emulator that could then run emulators like Z26 on DOS. Sometimes, these work okay, or they bomb, but at least it's still an option that might be worth trying. And not just for Atari emulation

This article is about hacking the m68k Activision Action pack to use more than just the roms it shipped with: https://metalbabble.wordpress.com/2020/07/23/atari-2600-emulation-for-classic-68k-macs/ mess/mame probably includes 2600 support, depending on the build you can find, but I've never tried it. Trivia: Writing an emulator for the 2600 can be a bit more of a challenge than for other systems....it only has 128 bytes of ram, and no frame buffer...ie what you see on screen is "bit banged" on a single register as the raster beam traces the screen, so timing is VERY important. (The entire screen isn't stored anywhere, so no "video ram"). I believe the 7800 remedied that.

I'm not really a big fan of emulation, but that would be so awesome to be able to play my favorite Atari games on System 7!!! I still have my Atari 2600 that my dad got in the '80s, and it still works. I can roll my score over on Yar's Revenge - my favorite game, and I maxed my score out on Chopper Command on the physical system.
