This is my first post. I have OS7 and a SCSI HDD. I got rid of OS8 25 years ago when I was decluttering and I regretted it very much. OS7 gave me a new dream.

I am running Logic Audio Platinum 3 on this OS7. Logic 3 seems to only handle SD2.

I also have OS9.2.2. My hope is to share files between OS7 and OS9. I have been sharing these two with floppy disks for a while.

I know I need to use a telephone line, but I don't know how to set up the system. I've been messing around with various things from the control panel, but...

If anyone knows how to set it up, can you tell me?

OS7 Today is a wonderful gathering of volunteers. I look forward to your continued support.

I'm a Japanese person who is not good at English, so I used Google Translate for this sentence.

Thank you.

@chietronix: Hello.

Here is a web site with instructions on how to share data between old Macintosh computers and more:

The web site has long since gone, but the Web Archive has kept a good mirror of it:

Main page: The Mac 512

Relevant pages for networking: AppleTalk-ing

Sharing data: Building a simple 2 device LocalTalk network

Although that site is in English you will be able to view the information there via Google translate.

Good luck.

Dear Son of the Samurai,

might you be able to help with the translation of this title I dug up in some remote corner of the Internet archive?

Yet I can't translate the darn menu items and thus can not resourcer the app to make it usable for us "non warriors".

PS: Sorry for the Samurai thing, but I'm an absolute fan of Akira Kurosawa ;-)

Thanks for your reply! I'll try this site. It seems that the Performa needs an Ethernet connection option. I'll look for it on eBay!

Thanks for your reply! Understood. I'll help you translate it. I have translated the manual for Ohm Force's Ohm Studio into Japanese in the past. How can I contact you personally?

@chietronix: Cool, what is the other Mac model, and what model of Performa that you have?

Thanks for your reply!

My Performa is a 5440. My other Mac is a G4 9.2.2. I also have a Power Book Duo. I need to buy the option to connect a LAN cable. It looks like it will work with the Duo too.

I've got a variety of Macs, including a few that don't have built in ethernet, but have been wanting to get them all connected.

In the very distant past I used an Apple product, I can't remember the exact name, but it was something like "AppleTalk/LocalTalk Gateway", which bridges the ports on the host machine.  I've run it on a quadra, which had connections both to ethernet and a LocalTalk (phonenet) network...it worked very well passing things back and forth.  It definitely allowed connections via the Chooser, although I don't remember if it also passed TCP/IP via MacTCP from the older machines.

I've got it on a floppy and will let you guys know the correct name (a VERY quick search using variations on MG didn't turn it up) once I set it up, and how it goes.  I haven't gotten around to it since I've been using my Quadra for A/UX...but I believe the gateway will work on any m68k machine, probably even with an ethernet card (not just built in).  I do remember it isn't compatible with OpenTransport...wondering if it'd run on an older PPC mac (I think it'd have to be a 601 based one)?

I really want to let my LC 475 (has apple2e card, so no room for ethetnet) and PB 170/180's (no ethernet) mount my B&W G3 running AppleShareIP.  Passing things back and forth by just floppy is such a pain for anything big...a zip drive is much better, but I'm concerned about its age and mechanical wear and tear.

Any additional forms of file transfer for vintage Macs is always a plus. Hope you remember what it was.

Ah, here it is, this will bridge a machine's localtalk and other (ethernet) network ports:
https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/localtalk-bridge-21

(It even says version 2.x supports OpenTransport, so the host machine won't have to be a really old one...but I'm guessing an older OS would be best to test first, ie 7.5).

Again, before anyone gets hopes of using it to browse the internet, it may or may not support MacTCP...which wraps TCP/IP packets in AppleTalk ones...but I'd think it MIGHT work since MacTCP obviously works over ethernet...I think there might be some tricky config needed, I'm guessing possibly setting the localtalk machine's router to the IP of the machine with the ethernet port. (ie the localtalk machine needs to route through the gateway host, it can't go "directly").

Because it says the newer one supports OpenTransport, I won't have to dedicate my quadra to it...I can try it on my 7600, running 7.5.3 when I have time.

Hello. Thanks for your reply! I'm looking for options to connect ethernet to 5440 on Japanese auctions and eBay. If you know the product name, please let me know. It's an old product, and I don't have any Mac users around me, so I have no choice but to rely on you guys.

I make music using MIDI. MIDI has been around since 1984, but there were sequencers and synthesizers before that. I like to make music on a Mac.

Since the 5440 doesn't have built in Ethernet you'll need to find a card for one of its slots: PCI or CommII
(I thought the 5440 had an LC/PDS slot also, but it doesn't look like it).

(The alternate being using the gateway and LocalTalk/PhoneNet which I previously mentioned, if you have ANOTHER mac that does have ethernet)

NOTE: CommI cards for m68k look a LOT like CommII cards for PPC, but will probably not work.  (I've heard some modems will, but not ethernet.)

I use a CommII card in my 6360, which has a very similar (pull out) motherboard design to the 5440.  (In fact, looking at a picture of 5440's, maybe the same design).

The LC/PDS and CommII slots are Apple-specific, so cards for them will be  old.

Even though a generic PCI Ethernet card, one you might pull out of a PC, will fit electrically, you will probably need to find a hacked driver to get it to work.  Some "Mac" Ethernet cards are just rebranded generic PC cards, so I've heard some people will have luck using a driver not meant for the card.

----

This is a CommII card I found on ebay...I'm just posting the very first one I found so you can see what they look like, I didn't try looking for cheaper prices:

And this is a PCI ethernet card from Apple (so you know it SHOULD work):
https://www.ebay.com/itm/354734067211

This is an LC/PDS slot card...but I don't think the 5440 has that slot:
