@Pasha26 The screenshot gives a representation of the fields that need to be filled. It's not literal. You enter your own personal details in those fields. Whether you use a gmail mail address or not, doesn't matter. The username and email address you use in those fields, are what get sent to the usenet server (in your case, Eternal-September), and it uses them to create a unique Message-ID for your posts. A Message-ID is what gets injected by the usenet server (usually encrypted) into a post that you send. It is to identify you on the server that accepts your post, which then delivers it to the newsgroup that you are posting to. The Message-ID seems to be what the error message you received relates to. If you had copied and pasted an email address into that field, perhaps it included some invisible characters unbeknown to you, which are unacceptable to the usenet server. You should probably re-enter your details by hand if possible, and use a test group to post a message to, to see how you get on. |

It looks OK. You don't need to add anything in the Organization field, it is an optional decision for you, not the actual word "optional" itself. You could try posting to a test group with that setting. If it still gives that error, try using a shorter, made-up email address -using your actual email address here isn't absolutely necessary. You could use pasha@gmail.invalid instead and that would probably work. ".invalid" is a genuine top level domain for usenet posts and is a preferred fake choice when using a non functional email address.

OK, I think I know what the issue is here. It has to do with the misleading field titles used in version 2.4.4 of MT-NW. In the Preferences for "Authentication". Where it has "Username:" this is where you must enter the "UserID" you chose when joining up with Eternal-September, which they may have also sent to you by email along with your password. It does not mean use your actual name here, this field actually requires using the UserID you created. For the other Authentication preferences fields, you must include the password you were sent, and check "save password" and "always authenticate". In the Preferences for "Personal information". Where it has "Full name:" this is where you add the name you want to use for your usenet posts - Not your actual full name. I see in the E-S test group that you posted OK as "Pasha07" (using Thunderbird and Outlook Express to post). So you can also enter Pasha07 in the "Full name" field. For the remaining "Personal information" fields, leave the "Organization" field, blank (unless you want to add an organization name that you are associated with). For the "Email address" field I recommend that you use an invented email, unless you actually want people to reply to you via email, as well. Using your actual email is inviting unsolicited email, spammers, etc. It would be preferable to use an invented address here, for example; pasha07@somewhere.invalid would actually work fine. Note: ".invalid" found at the end of a made-up email address is a valid use of a false address in usenet. Although many use not so legit addresses when faking one, the .invalid (TLD) is valid throughout usenet. It think the above info is what you need to get MT-NW 2.4.4 to work for you (screenshot). Good luck.

Great guide, MTT! Could we use it in an official guide here on System 7 Today?

Sure @Knezzen, modify it to suit and note that it is for version 2.x on System 7.6.1 or earlier. The setup arrangements for MT-NW change a bit with version 3.0 onward. 2.4.4 can run on 8+ systems too, but the PPC only MT-NW 3.x is a better choice if you can run those later versions. About MT-NW 3.0, it is PPC only and for Mac OS 8.0 and later, only. Because MT-NW 3 requires the Appearance Manager to run, I'd love to test if it would run in System 7x if the Appearance Manager was also installed. This is one of those times when I really would like access to a PPC Mac that can boot into System 7. [edit] MT-NW 3.0 is a prime candidate for System 7 with the Appearance Manager installed. I just installed it on Mac OS 7.6.1 for a look-see with SheepShaver, and it had no problem in starting up and running. I don't have networking installed in SheepShaver so I'm not able to test it out fully, but it looks promising. Versions beyond 3.0 will unlikely be viable in 7, as the requirement for version 3.1 states 8.5 minimum.
